This was very interesting book where the author's father as a boy made a motorcycle trip from the World Fair in NY to the one in San Francisco in '39 on a 1930 Harley.  Then author repeated the trip from SF to NY a few years ago.  Along the way, the son found out about a '39 Harley VL like his father's for sale, bought it, and rode part of the way of his journey before continuing on his Road King.

Pick up the book at your library sometime, a great read.

The author Johnny Newkirk lives in the Denver area and did a presentation and book signing at a local library last Sunday.  Also present was the "Old Man" (Jack) who is in his 90s and still very sharp, and the son's Harley VL .  I was able to attend and meet Johnny and Jack and get some photos.

Enjoy!

Not in my library, will have to check around.  Love the old stories. Real adventures.

The good old 45 inch flat head..     Most of them didn't have to poop to get out of their own way, but at least they hung together longer than the other HD engines.....

Used to race that same engine in the Bay Area in the 50's with a pair of aluminum heads on it.

Found the heads the other day as I was digging in boxes of mom's stuff.    I had left them with her and she kept em..    Bless her soul, RIP mom, love you. angel cooldude

I do a blog for the paper I work for. I recently ran across a somewhat similar story in a town close by and did a couple of blogs on it.

click the photos for a link to the blog.

You can find the book at Amazon for about $10 shipped.  It is worth it - - a wonderful story.

Thanks for the heads up on this book.  I've seen it at the book store and was wondering about it.

My last read was Big Sids Vincati.  You can also find an interview with Big Sid and his son on Jay Leno's web site.

You read these stories and the first thing I realize is how good we now have it, motorcycle wise, and how spoiled we have become.
