Today, on my way to work, there’s this fat albino girl in the left lane going 50 miles per hour in a 65!  Now, of course those people that have a clue know that it’s illegal to pass on the right, so this fat cow stays in the left lane putzing along without a care in the world eating her happy meal, while traffic piles up behind her.

Of course, she’s one of those idiots that has to stay in the left lane until the last second then without signaling, flies over and takes the exit clipping bumpers as she goes!

There’s got to be a law for this type of driving.  I can’t understand why you can watch this happen time and time again, and there’s never a cop around when you need one!!

Thanks for letting me vent!!

"On July 1, 2009, a new Kansas law goes into effect that makes it illegal to drive in the left lane of a multi-lane highway outside city limits – unless you are passing another vehicle, or exiting the highway.  (Other exceptions are construction zones and accidents.)  The new law does not apply to highways inside city limits.

Motorists who are pulled over for lingering in the left lane will be given warning tickets until July 2010.  After that, officers will begin issuing $60 tickets.

The intent of the law is to improve the flow of traffic on Kansas highways, and make them safer by reducing the incidents of tailgating and road rage caused by slower drivers who get in the left lane and stay there while traffic bunches up behind them.

If you aren’t passing, stay to the right and leave the left lane for passing. Whether you agree with it or not – come July 1st – it’s the law."

I think I remember reading one mile in the left not passing will be the measure. I haven't seen anyone pulled over yet...

In Indiana there is a law that required you to pull off the road (on a 2 lane) if there is more than 3 vehicles behind you.  (I have heard)

NEVER seen it enforced.  But I have heard it's there.

Maybe my resident Indiana Lawyer Vanagon40 will chime in and confirm of deny the truth of that law.

I think the Indiana law applies to farm equipment holding up traffic.

A special invitation to join a thread and everything [blushing].  Embarrassed

At first, I thought the three vehicle rule was a law because Wiki Answers said it was and everything on the internet is true: http://wiki.answers.com/Q/Slow_moving_vehicles_on_a_two_lane_highway_or_road_where_passing_is_unsafe_must_safely_pull_on_the_side_of_the_road_to_let_vehicles_pass_if_followed_by_3_vehicles

But then I was confused because another link on the same page said it was a five vehicle law: http://wiki.answers.com/Q/True_or_false_Slow_moving_vehicles_on_a_two-lane_where_passing_is_unsafe_most_pull_to_the_side_to_let_cars_pass

Seriously, there actually is a "three vehicle" law in Indiana.  Indiana Code § 9-21-5-7 provides:

Quote
A person may not drive a motor vehicle at a slow speed that impedes or blocks the normal and reasonable movement of traffic, except when reduced speed is necessary for safe operation or in compliance with the law.  A person who is driving at a slow speed so that three (3) or more other vehicles are blocked and cannot pass on the left around the vehicle shall give right-of-way to the other vehicles by pulling off to the right of the right lane at the earliest reasonable opportunity and allowing the blocked vehicles to pass.

As far as a response to the OP, on interstate highways, Indiana law prohibits trucks from traveling in passing lanes while not passing, Indiana Code § 9-21-8-12, but there is no similar provision for cars.

Indiana Code § 9-21-5-9 provides: "A vehicle that travels at a speed less than the established maximum shall travel in the right lanes to provide for better flow of traffic on the interstate highways."

Theoretically, an automobile driver can pull into the left lane, set the cruise at the speed limit, and ignore all the cars behind him.

Passing on the right is permitted on interstate highways.  Indiana Code § 9-21-8-6.

Vanagon... you Da'MAN!!

I needed this last night on SR46.  Honda Civic going between 35-50.  4 bikes and a truck pulling a 30' travel trailer stacked up behind her.  When you got a truck and 30' travel trailer tail grabbing you on a TWISTY road like that... you KNOW you're a hazard.

where were the  police's when you need them?  Not that they would DO anything about that anyway.

The Indiana law on right/left lanes is in the Driver's License manual, but I've never seen it enforced.
A week ago, I was driving the speed limit, maybe a mile or two over, in the left lane when a guy darted around me, on the right, to cut in front of me (dangerously close!!) to get in a left turn lane, that had just opened up (hope that makes sense). I had to slam the brakes (I was in the truck), so I threw up my hands in disgust. He got to the turn lane light, and I went by him. He pulled back out, followed me 4 blocks, to pull next to me, cussing and yelling, that I had stayed in the left lane for 1/2 mile. I calmly told him yes, but that I had gone the SPEED LIMIT the entire time, and that the law didn't say that the left lane was for people breaking the law. After a few loud "F-you's", he spun a u-ey, and roared off, back to the turnoff he missed. Guess he was in such a hurry, that he couldn't stand going the speed limit, but not in too much of a hurry to drive blocks out of his way, to call me names...

I always thought that "no passing on the right" meant not going onto the right shoulder to pass, or into a "right turn lane" to pass. otherwise, I would expect all LEO's to drive the speed limit, in the left lane, and we'd NEVER see any speeders... Cheesy

Road rage is getting out of hand...

Road rage is getting out of hand...

The other driver was out of line for displaying his road rage.
But
I would like to know WHO gave you the right to set the pace for every one else?  Is your speedometer calibrated to the exact tolerance that law enforcement uses to enforce speed? Did you figure out some way to synchronize your infinitely correct speed indicator in YOUR truck with every one else? or did you just decide you were some sort of god and every one should follow you because you get to set the safe speed rules? If it is raining should you run motorcyclist off the road because it's unsafe for them to ride in slick conditions ? after all you are the one given the power to enforce the rules and your instrument of speed measure is the only one that counts. We are all so much safer with you keeping them in line. I just hope that driver you pissed off doesn't hurt some one down the road with the rage that you instigated by being the self appointed speed enforcer. Be considerate and MOVE YER JUNK OVER ! ! tickedoff

Just to clarify, I said: "Theoretically, an automobile driver can pull into the left lane, set the cruise at the speed limit, and ignore all the cars behind him."

While this may technically be legal, it would certainly be poor driving etiquette.

I would expect that displays of road rage would be commonly encountered by any individual who consistently travels in the left hand lane at the speed limit (or maybe a mile or two over).

Maybe it was a misconception on my part, but I'm pretty sure that at least Texas, and I thought most, if not all states, have "Drive Right" laws... Basically, if you're not passing someone, and there's a lane to your right, move over to the right.

When my wife was about to have our first child I was speeding to the hospital.  Now sure, some wacko right winged zealot would say I was irresponsible and reckless in breaking the posted speed limit, and that I could have gotten in an accident.  But thankfully I didn’t come across any of those types of people at 4:30 in the morning!!  (by the way, she had a 91 minute labor, any time wasted and I would be delivering my daughter myself!!)

My point is, you don’t know why someone is speeding in the left lane, just don’t self appoint yourself as the local law enforcer!  If it makes you feel better, take down their plate number, pull off the road, and call the authorities.
