99 I/S, Speedometer needle went erratic than just quit, Odometer too. Anybody got any ideas? 36000 on the bike.

The IS has an electronic speedo. check the sending unit at the left fork leg. Shortleg[Dave]

I took sending unit off wheel and spun with a drill. It registered on the speedometer. Checked gear on the wheel, was good. Checked connection behind fairing, cleaned terminals and reconnected. Put all back together and road over 100 miles, no problem. I'm really spooked. Like to go on long trips and don't want problems on the road. That's why I bought this machine. It would be nice if one of the veteran owners could steer me to the solution.

Checking the battery connections and the ground connections should be close to the top of the list.

Thanks Ricky-D, that was my thought too. I know that ground problems can make all d/c circuits act weird.

Check to see that your alternator is working too. My dash display went haywire when the alternator went out.

The pickup on the wheel can pick up water from pressure washers or washing your bike at a carwash. Mine quit and I pulled the screws out of the housing, and water gushed out. After drying out, it went back to working perfectly. Worth looking at

I struggled with mine for several weeks. If the speedo reads when you spin it with a drill, then your problem is not electrical. Mine was the back side of the drive gear, where it contacts the 2 metal tabs of the ring (08 RETAINER, GEAR BOX 44680-ML7-000) located under the dust seal (19 DUST SEAL (45X55X5) 91258-ML7-003). Sometimes it would spin the drive gear and sometimes it wouldn't. Now that I remember, I think I replaced the drive gear, retainer ring, and dust seal all at one time; but I really don't think it is necessary. The slots on the back of the drive gear is what wears away. You won't see anything broken, but you might see a smear in the grease where the tabs on the retainng ring are spinning against the back of the drive gear when they pop out of the slots...

After several failed attempts to get mine working (about 2 years ago), I replaced the wheel bearings. Evidently, my bearings weren't bad enough to cause me any other problems other then false signals to the electronic sensor. No problems since replacing the bearings.

Actually sounds like there was faulty assembly previously and then was apparently corrected the last time around. There is no real connection between the speedometer pickup at the wheel and the wheel bearings except the axle which does not come into the equation. ***

...the gear that turn the pulse generator contacts the retainer which lays against the bearing. I believe the vibrations from bad brgs can cause intermittent interruptions in pulses being generated... Maybe not, but for less than $20, ya can't go wrong with new brgs... Just my 2cents.

Good question! After I put it all back together, It's been working fine. All I can do is wait for it to fail again. I hate when a problem goes away with no apparent solution. Only thing I can figure is that, when I reassembles it, the engagement in the wheel is deeper. I did bend the tabs, in the wheel, out a little. ???

Bending the tabs out may have been enough to do the trick! I tried it on mine but it must have already been too far gone...
