Nothing beats a 6-pack!

Hi, all...

something doesn't look quite right on the hard plastic "collar" on the back wheel. I noticed there's a gap on one side of it. Can someone tell me what it's SUPPOSED to look like, what do I have to do, to make it right, and how hard is it to do?

Also, what have I done, riding it this way? Not sure how long it's been like this, supposedly the tires have around 1000 miles, so might have been since then. They were changed by PO but at a very reputable dealer...

Any help is great appreciated...

I can't tell what's a shadow and what's not... it is on there cockeyed? you could try loosening the axle,
the bolt that holds the caliper bracket and then the four bolts that hold the final drive
to the swingarm... then tighten the axle first, then the caliper bolt, then the
four bolts that hold the drive to the swingarm...

Mike - yes, it appears somewhat cockeyed, as well as off the final drive. You can see the "flange" on the aluminum of the final drive, in my pics, and looks like the collar covers that, on yours. It also appears your collar is not as far on the actual wheel, as mine is. I wonder if it can just be slid towards the final drive, or are there "grooves" that I need to get it on? I don't have my jack yet, so don't really want to start taking it apart, until I do, but need to know if I'm doing any damage?

Is it just a dust cover?

EDIT: hopefully this pic shows it better - there's definitely a gap between the collar and the final drive:

Need a book!! Ordered, just hasn't gotten here yet.

yes, it is a dust cover.  It has notches that align and lock it on the final drive and is secured by rotating  CCW to engage the lugs, then held by a single bolt from the inside (accessable only when the wheel is off).  See the manual, page 12-5 or 12-18 for removal/re-assembly).

good luck...

Thanks...which manual are you using? I expect my Clymer to be here tomorrow, or the next day at the latest. Are the Honda manuals still available?

So, by your description, it would appear that when they put it together, they didn't lock the tabs it, so it's off the flange. At least, it sounds to me, that the tabs hold it in position, and the bolt secures it. I tried to turn it at all, and it doesn't move, so I am assuming that the bolt is in there, and tight. Not much play, or noise or anything, so I'm really hoping the bolt isn't loose, or gone...

thanks,

Roger

I would guess they didn't get the tabs in correctly, or they are broken off. Pull the wheel and it's probably an easy fix...

Not holding anyone to it, but would you consider it safe to drive? At least until I get my jack, which should be as soon as HF puts them on sale again (missed it last week!!)?

Thnks

Go to Dag's site, http://www.valkyrienorway.com/, and download the scanned version of the Honda Shop Manual.

If it's not rubbing the wheel, it's probably fine. Even rubbing, I would expect it's not dangerous...but could abrade the wheel.

IF the bolt came out...it could bounce around between the wheel and rear end and tear stuff up...but I would think the collar would be loose by then.

In short...if it were me I'd run it till I had time to fix it...but I'm just that way.

Thanks to all, for the info, suggestions, and to Dag for the manual...

What a great place!!

I feel pretty confident that it won't cause me any heartache until I can drop the rear tire. Thinking VERY hard about going darkside, just another excuse to do it sooner, than later...
