What I SHOULD have done….was shoved the desk/thing back in, and then nailed a piece of plywood over it, painted it to look like the surrounding walls, and just forgot about it. The next owner could worry it…

Heh...Yep...it's open. We spent all the money. We DO need to figure out if it's been disarmed...this is one of those "old wive's tails" that's actually true...in that certian older safes held nasty surprises for anybody trying to break in...

I understand that it has, but I'd like to confirm it...

Daniel, a friend mentioned to me several years ago about a substance that can be added to old paint. It  turns the paint into a solid block that can be safely disposed.
