I have my bike down for paint.  I'm getting a new rear tire on today. The splines are well lubed. No wear. Bearing look and feel good. I have all three O-rings.

I was thinking about checking out the U joint. Do you just remove the 4 bolts and pull the whole rear end off with the driveshaft? Do you need a gasket or seal where the four mounting bolts are?

yes
no

Just pull it off , there is a seal on the pinion cup, but it should not need replacing unless damaged.

Make sure the 2 holes in the bottom of the pinion cup are open prior to re-assembly.

After doing the stated stuff above, take back the runner boot back, located behind the engine. Wiggle the u joint out from there. Boot can be a bitch to put back on just use some pliers on the tabs.

You don't need to remove the rear end and drive shaft to inspect the universal joint.

Remove the rear brake assembly to reveal the swingarm boot and simply pull back the boot to observe the universal.

The rear wheel (swingarm) needs to be in a good alignment with the frame to allow turning the universal without doing any damage to the universal.

it's easy enough to determine what's with the universal if you know what to look for and how to look for "it".

A narrow-minded view might construe this as "look but don't touch" instructions but nothing could be further from what I post! You can absolutely feel the universal when the boot is pulled back!

Hmmm... How will visually inspecting it be better then manually feeling it? Could look alright but still have a little play in it.  ???

Check out the write up at www.rattlebars.com it is easy and the hardest put is getting the boot back on.
