I've changed the main and the ignition fuses. Still won't start. She gave no indication taht anything was wrong. Rode into town and got back on, pushed stater button....nothing. Had to push start her to get home. Any ideas on where to start looking for the problem? Thanks !!

Hopefully, could be as simple as the known Starter Button problems.

Solution here:

Good Luck...

Don't forget to check your kill switch on your handle bars.   Smiley

Be VERY CAREFUL when you separate the slider in the starter button, in order to "lightly" lubricate the contact points, because the little spring in there likes to jump out immediately when you separate the slider. And if it does pop out, your chances of ever seeing it again are not good.  Smiley

Battery. They go fast. If its 4 yrs old, change it. I rode 20 miles one day, got off for 5 min and wouldnt start. Battery is my bet.

Huh how about taking off the side cover and jumping the contacts on the starter relay. If it turns over then the starter is ok and the battery. If it doesnt then either the starter or the battery. Well its a start.

Pulled into a gas station while on the road last summer, filled her up and jumped back on, nothing. I had fixed the starter recently so knew it wasn't that. Pulled the seat to check the battery and the neg cable was loose as heck. Fixed it and away we went.

It's the weak point.  Usually you can clean it up and get it going again.  As pointed out, if you can turn the key on and jump across the large wires under the right side cover and it starts, the battery and starter are o.k.

Will it bump start and keep running?

If so, I'd check the battery next and connections.

If not, then I'd go into the alternator.

Check the battery with a volt meter with the key off, key on, then starter button pressed.
It sounds like the battery to me, they really don't give any early signs, they just crap out.

As always................great info from you all.

It never occured to me to check the battery because all the light come on. She has always been very reliable and just starts when you push the button. I'll get someone to check it tomorrow..............hope it's a quick fix.

Thanks to all that replied.

Experienced the identical issue 3 weeks ago.  I would get a loud click when hitting ignition.  I could start the beast by tapping the back of the starter with the handle of a screwdriver while depressing the starter.  I had no warning with this problem, it just decided one morning it wasn't going to start.  The fix was spending $700 for a new starter, or replace the brushes and milling down the cylinder for $165...........I obviously chose the latter.  Good luck to you!

BTW........the old battery teasted at 10 volts at AutoZone..........they said it was a good battery.
After talking with my neighbor, he claims that the bike needs 12 volts just to operate.

AutoZone, excellent source for intelligent information.

AutoZone has a cadre of highly qualified technicians well schooled in automotive mechanics.

They all know how to look up numbers and punch them in a computer!

Well...........still won't start, DANG. Put in new battery and still won't start. Like I said before, checked the fuses, all seem ok. So out of frustration I push started her again and let her idle for a while......noticed that the headlight is not on either. Signal lights are on, turn signals work, horn honks. No headlight, and it was replaced last year. I really suck when it comes to electrical issues. Gonna wait till my mechanic neighbor gets home from mass before I do any more.

Not sure how old the other battery was........ probably 4-6 yrs old. Last owner was not much for maintenance.

did you do the starter button maintenance as was suggested?  If the headlight is acting up, that indicates teh starter switch, as it is tied into the switch

not the battery.  Get your friend to help you very carefully dis-assemble the starter button and clean it up.

As it turns out................it seems it is the starter button. Took it apart and cleaned the contacts. Still would not start. Used a jumper cable on the contact pad inside the starter button and got the starter to cycle...........then I noticed that the contacts on the push button part of the button were filed down so far that you can hardly notice them. Now the question is............how to rebuild the button contact area?

if they have been filed or cleaned before, you might need new parts.

  05 SWITCH, STARTER STOP
35013-MZ0-010  (replaces 35013-MZ0-000)  001 $90.58 $73.73

This came from MRCYCLES website.  You might get in touch with Pinwall cycles, they may have a used one a lot cheaper.  I searched for a 98 model, don't remember if you posted your year or not.

When I did my starter switch a few years ago, I bought a new one on eBay. If I remember correctly, the starter button for the Valks is used on other Honda's as well.

I did not change the entire button out; I replaced the sliding part (white plastic) from the new one and was good to go.

Thats what I'm looking for now........just the white plastic button part of it. To replace it with a new one includes the housing and alot of stuff I don't need. Gonna check for some contact points at radio shack tomrrow and ebay tonight. Again....thanks for all the advise and input........always a blessing.

I had to replace the contact slide a few years ago. Due to the PO installing highway lights and no relay, the contacts were melted into the plastic. I couldn't find parts for the switch, had to buy the whole thing.
