Living the dream in Sharonville, OH - with Sharon!

« on: July 15, 2010, 07:29:06 PM »

Our guests from Norway were due in at 5:00pm today; however, we still do not have a clear picture of what their plans are.

As of now, we are still planning a Friday night dinner in the Denton/Ponder area, but we still don't have a time or a place.

The Saturday ride is even less defined. When Chris last spoke to our guest they indicated that because of jet-lag issues they may be heading out at 3:00 or 4:00 AM Saturday morning. (Sorry but that would be without me)

I apologize that nothing is nailed down, We will keep you posted via the board and email as things develop.

Thanks

That may be a wise move with this heat and humidity.  I just googled temps in Norway and they are from the 40's through the 60's.

I heard from our friends around 9:30pm. They had just gotten settled into the hotel. I am not sure if there was confusion on my end or on the other end about how the jet lag was going to affect them. They had been up about 24 hours straight, he said it was difficult to sleep on the plane. The time difference would have made it 4:30 am their time. I think that is where I got five o'clock from, just five on the wrong continent. He said the women wanted to sleep in a little so I expect to see them sometime mid morning tomorrow. I will post an update as soon as I can.

Sorry the map came from their website.

They are on the intersection of 380 and Pottery Shop Rd

Slide the map a little to the right any you'll see them.

Spousal Unit has me tied up for tonite - was open until yesterday when she said if I didn't have definite plans, she'd make some.  Sad

But I think I'll join them for a little ride tomorrow.  Anyone else going to be there?  I'm planning on being there around 8-8:30.

I think Godfire volunteered me to lead the ride in the morning.  He called it "delegation".  coolsmiley

I think the plan is to meet at the Best Western on the NE corner of 380 and I35, and have KSU around 9.  I'm playing it safe a bit with the route for a few reasons.  Its gonna get hot fast, I dont know if they are used to riding long distances for a while, and with a later start, it will put them in Amarillo later.  Here is the planned route. Things can change if they want to take it a bit more scenic, but I would like to make it home before its 100 myself.  Once we get to Saint Jo, we will stop at the biker store on the square, we can see what people want, and change accordingly.

I dont know where to eat in Wichita Falls though, so if someone wants to point me somewhere or take the lead that would be great.

35 to Sanger
455 from Sanger to Forestburg
677 from Forestburg to Saint Jo
82 to Wichita Falls with a probable stop in Nocona for gas for those who need.

For lunch I'm thinkin BBQ.  Richards Barbecue.  Got all good reviews from what I've found so far.  Branding Iron had gotten a couple bad reviews.  Dunno.  I'm still wide open for suggestions.

My guess would be lunch would be around 12-1.

Dag,

The temperature is expected to reach 100 degrees today and the heat index values are expected to meet or exceed 105 degrees. I wasn't able to go with the group today because I had to work, but I just stepped outside and I believe you can cook an egg on the sidewalk. I hope they are prepared for this heat.

I'm sure Åge and Unni are looking forward to get further north and cool down a little bit.

Amarillo - Near 100 today and tomorrow. Expect high temps all the way to Chicago. When they call it the breadbasket of America, they omit the part where you can bake the bread too!
Headed to niece's 25th anniversary here in a bit and expect to be back in Amarillo by 6 p.m.

Met up with Åge and Unni plus the backup crew in the car this morning.  We took off about 9:10, ride leader ThagAndy.  We went thru Krum, then up thru Nocona and stopped in Wichita Falls about 1:30 or so for lunch at Richards BBQ.  Good BBQ.  Looked over the map for the rest of their journey.  Sidecar made suggestions on where to stop and trails to take in the Appalachian mountain area.  About 2:30. left the restaurant and headed to 287.  When we got there, Åge and Unni headed north, ThagAndy, Godfire and RainMaker headed south and Sidecar headed to his ranch to the east.

GreenLantern - we kinda' know where they are going (Route 66 towards St. Louis) but find out where they are going to stop tomorrow night and let's post on the main board for our VRCC brothers on their route.

They mentioned stopping at Palo Duro Canyon while in your area.

Elizabeth (Mrs. ThagAndy) has pictures and will post them later.

Yeah, it was hot, but we had a great ride anyway.

Six Valks with seven riders met with our guests friends from Norway at 9:00am this morning in Denton to brave the heat for a journey to Wichita Falls.  Two bikes peeled off in-route due to prior commitments. ThagAndy did a great job at being "delegated" ride leader and got us to an outstanding Texas BBQ  joint. (with working AC!) After lunch we headed to hwy 287 and the DFW group headed south and our new friends head north to Amarillo (by morning, up from San Antone Denton...sorry couldn't resist) crazy2

A large time was had by All. Great food, great bikes, great people.....what more is there?  cooldude

Thanks again to Andy for an outstanding job as ride leader!

Ride Safe Åge, Unni and company!

(my translation from Norwegian)
Hey, we arrived Amarillo yesterday at 6pm. We was at the Big Texan Steakranch last night, it was an experience. Today we have seen Cadillac Ranch and rode the Palo Duro Canyon. Now we are eating and will go the museum for Route 66. All well with us, we are enjoying ourselves ;-)

Our friends ( what else could you call these great people ) called this afternoon. They had gone down into Palo Duro Canyon and then out to see the Caddilac ranch. The ladies were ready for shopping so they rested a bit and went down to old Route 66 shopping area. We then met at Ruby Tequila's on Georgia for some good Tex-Mex. We had a great meal and talked about thier route, what to see, and then started talking about bikes, vacations and the weather. I made an album to post the pictures fast.

http://community.webshots.com/album/578208257zjrshU?vhost=community

Not sure how big pictures are allowed here, but I put the photos I took on my webshots page.
We all agreed that they should head out as early as possible tomorrow, Monday. Maybe put them into OKC 1 or 2 p.m. That way they could rest, go to Cowboy Hall of Fame, Bricktown. They may take old Route 66 up to Tulsa instead of I-44.
Wish I could have taken off tomorrow to ride with them a few hours.

This evening we had dinner with green man. It was very pleasant and he was very helpful.

Two minutes later, a new message;
I meant green lantern, not green man  Smiley
I thought I should send this patch before I got a questions from you if there are many small green men here.

I got this message from Åge yesterday.

Tonight we have looked at the pictures that are posted on the board, and we can only confirm that we have it as good as it seems. After we went fraq Amarillo, we followed Route 66 past the Oklahoma City and halfway to Tulsa. It was more than enough ...... It is very hot 102 F  Today's ride has featured many famous attractions and was very nice. We rode through Tulsa, Miami and Glendale and stopped tonight in Joplin.
Further, the question is whether we should ride in the mountains of the Ozark? We have not decided yet. It is reported a little rain for tomorrow. but a few raindrops can not hurt. We are pleased to have met many great VRCC people, they were very helpful and really made us feel welcome. We really hope to see some of them in Norway one day!!!!
