Lost A Good Man Today UPDATED!!!

George County, MS Sheriff Gary Welford was run over and killed this afternoon while deploying a spike strip to stop druggies that were running from his deputies who were persuing them because they failed to appear for court.  My heart and condolences go out to his family, the George County Sheriff's Department and all my fellow citizens of George County.  We lost a fine man today.

These sort of posts are always so hard to read.  I pray for his family, and am sure he is in a better place.

Were the subjects arrested or are they still on the loose....

My prayers, condolences, and thoughts to the families involved.

It hurts to lose any one this way.

RJ, as of 10 pm they were still on the loose.  The suspects are a 24 year old white male and an 18 year old white female.  According to WKRG Channel 5, the female was driving.  Here's a link to the tv channel's website and story  http://www.wkrg.com/mississippi/article/sheriff-run-over-during-chase/907376/Jul-21-2010_10-54-pm/.  This hits us current and former LEOs the hardest.   :'(

Hey Marty, my deepest condelences for an Officer down, prayers for the family and the George County, MS Sheriff's Dept.  Sounds like he was a cop instead of a politician!  We are blessed here in Cabell Co. WV with such a Sherrif. You can see him out at all hrs. on traffic stops and working wrecks or clearing houses. We worry about him doing these things but he says being a cop is in your blood and can't stop. Sounds like Sherrif Welford was just such a man.

Yeah he was.  In 2004 he retired from Mississippi Game and Fish Commission and ran for Sheriff.  Won by a landslide and had no problem being re-elected two years ago.  According to some of his close friends, he wasn't going to run for re-election in 2012.  He was going to retire.

At 6:30 this morning, K-9 units tracked the two POSes to a trailer where the Mississippi Highway Patrol SWAT Team took them into custody.  Both suspects have been booked into a jail in another county.  Awesome work by all Officers involved.      Now all that is left is the healing and that won't happen until they've been sentenced.  Since they've both been charged with Capital Murder, they're looking at Death or Life Without Parole.
