Joe .... I think you should go at least once, it is well worth the experience. The roads in the Black Hills are awsome and there are a few that will take your breath away. There is just something special  about a few hundred Buffalos that want to cross the road.  Yes there are a lot of people but most want to just ride. Yes there will be traffic backups but then when you look and see some pretty young thing in lingerie causing the backup ... well it just don't seem so bad.  Yeah the yuppies, the posers and the RUBs are there but they are every where these days. Just my 2 cents.

Joe old buddy.   The traffic jam is coming off either ramp (I-90) into Sturgis, then it is wheel to wheel all the way up main street, this is the one that always appears on the advertisements.    Bikes only from Tuesday through Sunday for about 7 or 8 blocks.    Go a block further North and at least ya have a full 4 lane street to share.   Hit the freeway and head West, get off at the Deadwood exit and ride South about 10 miles to Deadwood.   You will hit traffic in Deadwood, but it is not as bad a Sturgis.  99.9% of the casino's are in Deadwood.

Go on South out of Deadwood and head towards Hill City, Custer and that area.

Normal traffic moving along about 50 to 60 in most places.   Lots of nice curves,  and other things to look at.    Sturgis is just a stop off for this Rally.    Every town around Sturgis has something going on.  If ya spend all your time in Sturgis, you are there only to see the lack of clothing on some of the people, and even less at the Campgrounds.

The Rally in Sturgis has been cleaned up quite well by the City of Sturgis.  They got some hefty fines for lack of clothing, OWI, drugs and etc.  Get caught with drugs, kiss your ride good by.........

It is a bear in some peoples eyes before the 1st time, but go once and your opinion changes, and you will want to return to take in some more of what ya wanted to see but didn't have time before.................

In Joes defense, he has been out there. Pre-Valk years.

Joe, its not really that bad. Like we talked before, you gotta know when to go and where to go. Lotta short cuts thru town. What will take you 40 min to do thru the main drag, I'll can get you thru in 10 min. The Black Hills and 100 miles each way is where its all at, not intown. I know some that go and never been into Sturgis!

I'm with chrome dome tho on the roads. I've riden the Smokies and the Dragon but Iron Mountain Rd, Needles Hiway, Spearfish Canyon, Vanocker Canyon, and 14A to Deadwood are God's countries roads.  Wink 5 mph downhill turns are great!

R.J. your right. Stuff on the streets is nothing compared to any other bike event. Seeing way to many strollers. I've seen enought T&A to last a lifetime. Well at least the 'T' part. I'll take all the 'A' I can look at! Your right to on the LEO's. Learn the laws and your 4th amendment right. Been there 6 yrs this year and I think I have only seen less then half what is out there. Would make a great IZ.  Smiley

T.P. I think we will miss each other. We are leaving a night earlier then expected, the 3rd. We'll be at camp noon friday 6th. Getting hitched on the 9th and pulling up camp and head to the Bilings MT area on the 11th. Heading back to Ind on the 12th. Be back home on the 14 or 15th. Unless you plan on taking the southern route we wont see each other. I'll never take 90 again.

Shade Valley is good. There in 08. Your best bet to camp is in the trees by the creek. Gets full fast tho. Roads are mud when it rains, so expect it. We miss seeing Bear Butte in the early mornings as we ride into town.  Embarrassed Watch for deer and stuff after dark. Thats a dark 8 miles back to camp. Esp watch them curves. Usually no cops till you get to the Chip.
Best to do the Badlands early morn. Its hot then it gets boring. If you are coming up the southern route, Yankton, Winner, Interior, Scenic, instead of the gawd awlful 90, you go thru alot of the Badlands, and its free!  crazy2 Another little tip, catch someone leaving the Badlands and get there park pass. Most will give it to ya. Saves you from paying to get in. Go to Custer 1st and after you pay, you will be able to get into other State Parks from that pass. Bear Butte, etc. If not you have to pay each time.
Have fun.

2 of my favs. Normally we meet Valkhound (Dana) at one eyeds a few nights a week. We'll be in the austrailian looking room near the restrooms. If not you will find Kit & I in the dungeon every night. Dungeon is to loud for a meet and greet, unless we go upstairs. Check out my Sturgis wedding post for some info.
