How many miles can a person expect from the U-Joint in general ?? I have 27k miles on my '99 Std. and am getting ready to leave on a 3k mile bike trip. Any need to worry 'bout it ??
Thanks for the input.

In general, I think a lot more than 27K miles. If you don't have any bad symptoms (grinding, clunking, bumping in the seat and/or pegs) and don't have a lot of play in the drive train (ride very slowly and barely goose the throttle, to check) you should be good to go.
Some fail sooner than others, obviously, but I think many earlier failures may be related to chronic power takeoffs, clutch drops, wheelies, nitrous, tire burnouts....... hard use in general.

Well that's a load off my mind. I've gone thru the bike from front to rear and serviced what ever needed servicing but wasn't sure what to think of the U-Joint. It doesn't have any symptoms described (grinding, clunking, etc.) so I feel better now after reading your reply's.
Thanks again for the speedy response.

Solve the problem and buy a u-joint and keep it handy! I bought one at about your mileage and still have it. There was a time when they were scarce so... If it buys peace of mind get one!

Mine went at 22,537, and, with 20:20 hindsight, was symptomatic leading up to its total separation. However, I never considered the possibility that the u-joint was failing because of the low miles and incorrectly attributed the symptoms to changes I'd recently made to the bike and the road surfaces ridden down to hotglue's GOTF. The lash I felt in the rear end / drive line had to be the dampers shrinking over time. The vibration in the grips had to be because I'd changed bars and risers. The minimal vibration in the pegs (and bars) had to be the large granule macadam roads we were riding. The occasional whiff of what I thought must be fuel in the garage (probably grease burning out of the bearings) had to be because I'd replaced the fuel lines and there were scuffs in the line at the petcock nipple.
What we believe to be the culprit in the premature failure was that the boot was not fully seated at the front (rear of the engine) and had let moisture / grit intrude.
If 1) you don't have any of those symptoms and 2) your boot is seated properly, ride and don't worry about it yet.

Just replaced mine @ 70K, no symptoms other than some slop in the drive train. The change help that.

103,000 miles on the original U-joint here. Gonna replace it "just because" while I change a rear tire & do other needed maintenence back there. Some driveline slop but not much considering the miles. I would say you are good to go for quite a while unless you drag race a lot!

Mine went out on I44 (MO) at about 18k ... wasn't pretty. I was able to limp a mile into the next exit & get a lift. (I heard Honda had a bad lot that got into some of the 99s). Just wrong to see that pretty Red Girl on a flatbed
