Hi guys, I have a 98 tourer that I have owned for three seasons now. When I bought the bike from a dealer, the previous owner had installed the 416 air shocks. I do not know if the front springs were changed out or not.
I have always wondered why the bike has this model of Progressive shock installed, as opposed to the other types they sell. Most Valks I see or read about here do not have 416's. They are usually the other ones.
I have been thinking on making changes in this area. I wonder if I would get a nicer ride on the stock shocks or maybe a different Progressive shock.
I am not complaining about the ride really. It seems alright, but I haven't compared it to anything else either because I have only had the 416's.
Are the 416's the heavy duty kind that maybe the other owner used with a trailer or maybe he was a really big guy?

Thanks for any advice, Eric

I have a friend with 416's on an I/S. He and his SO are over 400lbs combined. At first he didn't like them. But while installing a new rear tire, he found that the air lines were installed poorly. They were pushed into the shock too far which jammed the tubing inside the shock. After repairing, he loves them. He can adjust the preload anytime.

I have a set of Progressive 13" 440 HD shocks.  They are OK, but are not enough for my SO and I together (550 lbs) and I ordered a set of Works Performance shocks.  The works shocks are about the same cost, or a little cheaper, and are built FOR YOU.  That could be good or bad.  For me it was good.  I have the 440's on my standard, that I ride 1-up, and the works on the IS for 2-up riding.  The Works shocks have some additional features that I like too.

I have a set of 416's on mine and like a lot and definitely more than the standard ones (I know I am a fairly lone voice here). SWMBO (SO on your side of the pond) likes them too which in my household is more important Wink It is a matter of personal choice, she only comes out on the Valk occasionally and I find it very easy to either pump up or let down the pressure rather than trying to find the C spanner and adjust as the number of riders changes.

I just replaced my rear shocks and was debating between the 416 and 440. Naturally the guy at progressive tells me that the 440 is suppose to have a better ride due to the IAS valve that is only on that shock.

What actually sold me was the difference in the warranty.

I would be willing to trade you my brand new (5000 miles) 440HD 13" shocks for your 416 air shocks.  I am in a similar situation as Jabba and need the extra capacity.  I don't want to try and sell these 440HD's  and go the Works Performance route.  I have my stock IS shocks that I can live with until the swap is complete.

If you are interested, just shoot me a PM.

my IS had 416s when I bought it ... I've been happy with them. I ride alone a lot but do take trips 2up &trailer with no issues.

Hay Hauler give me a PM. I have some 416s you can try if you like we can work something out. I got about 4k on them and then moved to the 440 13 HDs.
