Good looking bike. What's the black curved thingy beneath the spotlamp, near the front fender?

The Indians 100ci had engine problems, most of the upgraded engine work is done by Blackhawk motors.

Beware of the Gilroy Indians, I read that the engines frequently have major problems at around 10K miles resulting in a multi-thousand dollar fix.  In other words, do your research before buying.  Here's a link with some more info (see post #8):

http://forums.pelicanparts.com/off-topic-discussions/394883-anyone-have-gilroy-indian.html

BTW, I love the look of Indians but I would wait for the current version to start selling used at more reasonable prices.

I hope it's a brand new one and not one made a few years ago....those were crap....engine problems...rest of the bike was basically bolt-ons from different companies...new ones are pricey, but they're doing it right - re-engineered the bike and having every part of the bike made specifically for it....

The "black curved thingy beneath the spotlamp" looks like one of those old leather tool bags Harley riders strapped on 'back in the day' (?) If you mounted them wrong or overloaded them, it would obliterate the fender paint.

No offense to anyone - really - but other than looks, (and they look fantastic) the Indians have nothing going for them - IMO. A sergeant who worked for me got one when he retired. I've only ridden with him twice and both times his Indian died, once with a stream of oil blowing everywhere. In fairness; I'm never rode one. . . but I've helped pushed a couple of em.  I did read where the new owners re-engineered them, but it pushed the cost through the roof (?)

Tool bag.  Would be my guess.   They are trying to be authentic.

Yep thanks for all the heads up on the power plus motor, they also have a oil pump problem, It's not that i am selling "Rosie". The power plus was selling in 02 for around 25k so for half price might just take the plunge, as far as problems can't even start to talk about all the recall's i have seen on the HD's  but even with all the melt downs i hear about the Supercharged Valk i seem to be lucky....i guess Wink.. I want something that i can work on, all i ever do is spend money on chrome for the Valk LOL! I guess i am just a purist and also married to a Indian,I Just like the V twin sound but always like being different. I will pledge to continue to always wear my Jimmy Buffet shirts or white tee shirts and avoid the pirate look, But what the hay nothing like a being the owner of America's first motorcycle.

yeah, I was looking at it wrong, it's just a toolbag. I didn't  think of that because it's so low that "nobody would put a toolbag down there"  Wink Just one good pothole away from denting the fender, at least it'll be a bigger dent than gremlin bells make (bragging rights-"mines bigger")

The Smart is way too tall and the gas mileage sucks. You can get a small 4 door car with better mpg for the same money.

My wife said her Honda Civic gets better mileage than what she read about the SmartCar.

Reason and logic has nothing to do with this...

Whenever a thread like this comes up, I search for Indians on eBay... nobody (that I've ever seen) sells the North Carolina ones, but there's always a bunch of
California ones, a few (expensive) real ones and a few 1970 toy ones... I haunted the honda/yamaha/suzuki shops in the early 70's (finally got a 1972 yamaha
lt-2 100)...  they had the 100cc (or whatever) Indians at the suzuki shop in downtown greenville...

I most certainly do remember the Indians with their big valenced fenders,  Beautiful bikes.  They didn't sell like the Harleys though, even with the lighted Indian Head on the front fender.

Indian then made the mistake of trying to duplicate the British bikes with their Apaches and the Scouts..  The new bikes soon got a very bad reputation for reliability and the Indian Motocycle company went feet up soon after.

I understand that the new Indians are that in name only and look like Indians only because of  the valenced fenders.  The engines bear no resemblance to the old Indian side valves.  IMHO, the Indian is again on shaky ground after the second attempt to bring the brand back.  Maybe the present guy might get it going.  I understand that he brought back the old Chris Craft boats.

I looked at the new ones at a local dealer and couldn't believe the prices. I hear they're taking $5,000 to $9,000 off the MSRP these days. They're 'OK' but I don't know what makes them an Indian except the name on the tank. It looks too much like just another Harley clone with round engine cylinders. I wouln't want that Power Plus engine at all. To remove the oil filter on the new ones at my local dealer you have to remove a hard brake line just to unscrew the filter. Then when you remove the filter it's guaranteed to spill oil all over the wire harness connections. IMHO, anything so obvious and poorly designed makes me wonder what else they goofed on.

Spend under $6,000 on a used Moto Guzzi Bassa and you'll get 1000 times more sincere positive comments from other bikers and you'll draw a crowd in a motorcycle filled parking lot.

Biggest thing against the "new" Indians... Still a V-twin, still air cooled, & still drains your wallet. I don't like paying for the smile on a dog.  Roll Eyes  2funny
