Ok.....the gurus where right as always.....was the gas cap.

I had replaced the one that came with the bike when I first bought it.  The original owner had painted it black...I suppose to stop the reflection on the windshild.  I bought a used fuel cap and ring off of ebay that was still original chrome.  Thought I saved some money.   uglystupid2  Well, the used cap from ebay failed.

Got a brand new chrome one coming to replace the dud.  All's well in the garage again.   cooldude

However, after reading about all of the petcock failures on here, this episode has scared me and I'm wanting to avoid the dreded "hydrolock" from a failed petcock.

So as a preventive maintainence kind of thing, I'm going to rebuild the OEM petcock.  Have a rebuild kit on order.

While I have the tank off, I'm also going to order a new petcock vacuum line and a Valkyrie fuel line quick disconnect kit from Red Eye.

Is there anything else that I need to do, check or replace while I'm doing surgery while the tank is off the bike?

Thanks for the help gurus.   cooldude

Redeye tech makes some good replacement parts, but there have been a few negative reports on the fuel line quick disconnect lately.

Have you looked into the electric fuel shutoff option?  This doesn't help with attaching the fuel line when removing or installing the tank, but it does help prevent damage due to vacuum petcock failure.  If you replace the petcock with a manual Pingel unit and add the electric shutoff, then this might put your mind at ease.

Dont rebuild replace, some guys have been rebuilding them but why take a chance with a pos to ruin your engine. I have a belly tank and I like it.

Actually, after I thought about it for a little while, I went ahead and ordered a new one to replace it with and will go ahead and replace the old with a brand new one.

I'll rebuild the old one and keep it for a spare.  The rebuild kit was very cheap.

The Red Eye site says he's on vacation and the site is down.  Sent an email asking when it's going to be back up......might have to wait on part of this untill I can get the quick disconnect kit from Red Eye.

Install one of these while you're in there.  Never worry about hydrolock again!

I replaced the intake o rings and eliminated the gasoline smell.  They leaked just a little bit.

Red Eye has an intake o-ring kit available.

That's one of the things that I'm wanting to order, but I'm waiting for him to get back off of vacation and get the site back up so I can order a bunch of stuff.

Sent him an email asking when and he replied back that he'd be back after the 7th of Aug.  I'll check after that and place an order with him when the site's back up.
