WTF? Unbelievable!

I drove a police car for 25 years and I just do not understand how this could have happened!

I've heard of bikes getting hit while stopped at lights by drunks or other inattentive morons.

But a police cruiser running lights and sirens?

Must have got his training with the Austin Police Department.

Prayers to the families involved.

And remember - everyone is trying to kill you when you ride.

As an ex-officer myself this does not surprise me.

Lights and Sirens are a REQUEST for right of way, it does not actually CLEAR A PATH as some seem to think.

I hate to second guess but why was he running code to back up a unit serving a warrant. I worked in warrants for several years and never needed a back up run code to get to me. Serving warrants in general is a planned event. If you need back up, CALL AHEAD! I hope there is more to the story as the press only sensationalizes events to sale papers.

I also blame the politicians for budget cuts, which equates to lack of proper training.

My prayers go out to the officer and the families of the victims.

Tearless Tom, you beat me to the question as to why he was running code on serving a warrant.

I wouldn't even try to 2nd guess this one.

I've had drivers setting at lights as I came up on them running lights and siren, then have them turn right in front of me to get out of the way.    Worse case was when I was on a motor and took the drivers door out for a gentleman, then he sued the State for repairs and injury.      He lost................

We it said he was going for back up for a felony warrent. Who knows what the 1st officer walked into. Judging by the address it sounds like its not on the bad side of town but up near where the ritzo's live. You wont believe some of the stuff we run lights for on the ambulance. Anymore we hear the address and know who it is and we drive slow. Stupid.

sounds like stopping for a traffic light is more dangerous then running it.

I can definately vouch for that one. Been hit x2 now while stopped. Now late at night I stop, clear the intersection and go.

Police said Bisard is a nine-year veteran of the department.  "The post-trauma team was on the scene to assist him. He was not hurt physically, but he's not doing very well mentally, as you might expect," Dixon said.

WELL BOO F,,,ING HOO!

Was there a post traumatic stress team for the poor fricking riders who managed to stay alive? I F,,,ING DOUBT IT.

In an interview afterwards with the guy that wasn't hit, he stated that the bikes were in the left lane with cars on the right and cars in front of them - nowhere to go as the cruiser came up fast behind them.  Sounded like the cruiser jumped a cement median trying to swerve to miss the bikes.
The news tracked the guy down afterwards because he had a vest with a VFW patch/# on the back.

Your observations are right on, Tom.  I am always mindful of emergency vehicles but was almost taken out by one myself.

They have a tough job and we may not have all of the facts about the story.  Maybe the police needed backup as the person being served was fighting.  They don't always come peacefully.  JMHO

From the Indianapolis Star: "I heard the sirens coming," Burt said. "I looked to the left, then to the right, and then back, and I see a cop car coming toward us. We can't move to the right, because there are cars stopped to the right. We can't go forward, because there are cars in front of us. What we did, is we stayed put. It's what we are supposed to do. The only avenue for the cop is the left-turn lane, and that was free."

Saw a PD cross the double-yellows today ... Fortunately no bikes were around.  Messing with his radio or computer, no doubt.

My thoughts exactly! Sounds like he just misjudged his speed and stopping/maneuverability of his cruiser.

we had a deschutes county sheriff (central Oregon) doing approx 90 MPH at night down a county road hit a angus (black angus, in the dark, in the middle of the road?) he was on his way to a domestic call that was covered. he caught alot of hell for that, after he got out of the hospital.
