May be wrong but reading Chet's page it doesn't look like cupping. Tire has about 4,000 miles on it.
The tire has good tread but center 2 inches wide has an edge on each side  instead of being round.
I run 42 pounds and check it regularly. Any suggestions???

i had 4000 miles on mine when Dunlop offered to check my tires for free at a Wing Ding, i asdked them why the tires did that and they told me i had the wrong tire pressure. when i asked them to check it for me thy said good pressure, but its not the tire. uglystupid2  thats when i went Dark Side. that goofy tire now has 11,000 miles on it and guess what, its still flat down the middle.  2funny

I doubt very much if anyone can get 20k out of an E3....

I might be wrong, so if anyone one has gotten that many miles, would ya please post it and maybe a picture of the tire.

Thanks.

I ran the Elite 206 past 20K twice and now the E3 past 20K twice and Im on the third one and I expect more than 20k.  The last one actually went 23K before touching a wear bar.  I always run 42K and yes, unless I stay on twisty roads all the time they develop a flat spot after 10K or so, thats simply from running on straight roads, its normal tire wear

This one has 14,500 miles now

I run E3's on my Interstate, and the past two rear tires I've gotten around 14,000 - 16,000 miles, with slightly better on the fronts. I've always had that little flat strip on the middle of the rear tire, even though I keep it around 42 pounds. I'm not a super aggressive rider, although I do enjoy the twisty roads. On long trips I pull a Dart trailer, too. I have no complaints about the E3 tires at all, especially their rain/wet performance.

I ran the E3 dunlops on the back and always got over 20K miles on them. It is kinda flat down here in S Texas. I do get over to the hill country when I can. Run 1 up no trailer on a IS. I don't putt around and I'm hard to keep up with, there's just no peg scraping corners to play in. I have gone to the dark side and that decision was based on wanting to give it a try. I like the new generation MC tire and will stay with it for now. A Cobra V R is what's up front.

I've run Avons, Bridgestones and Dunlops on my 99 IS. All wore with this flat spot in the middle. It's just normal wear from driving on straight roads as was mentioned. Nothing wrong.

Nothing wrong with the flat spot, as was said, it is normal for straight road riding.

Some call them "Chicken Stripes", but that is not what they really are. It's really more of a reflection of what type of riding you do. Most motorcycles spend a lot more time upright than leaned over. The severity of the "lean angle" would only make the tire be used more up toward the bead, but unless you are road racing almost exclusively, the center still sees more wear. Just think about this: How often is the bike leaned over while using high torque for acceleration or braking, compared to the bike being upright during fast get awaways and stops? That is where most wear occurs. Just rolling down the road the wear is minimal unless you ride on extremely abrasive roads, or where a lot of "milling" of the road surface has occured like in construction zones. They are like riding your bike on a file or sandpaper.

Most motorcycle tires will show this type of wear during normal useage.

If I'm not mistaken many MC tires have a longer wearing compund in the center (about 2 inches wide) and usually as the tire wears it may leave a small step down to either side of the harder compound band.

only certain tire companies and then only 1 or 2 of their models.

I hope I can duplicate that. Even 2/3 of that would be good. Just put a new E3 on the rear. Usually not a Dunlop fan due to my Harley experiences where I run Metzler ME880 exclusively with good results. So far from a handling, wet, dry, etc. view I am very happy with the E3 (Frt & Back)

Sounds like a pretty good idea to me... I did not know that. Can you elaborate on which company/model have this feature? Any experience with it? Does it last longer?

My E3 developed a distinct center band with very defined left and right edges, leading me to believe that the E3 is one of the tires with a harder wear band in the center, no proof other than observation.

I noticed the same thing with both a Metzler and a Dunlop E3 (flat spot in the middle). I attributed it to riding lots of miles loaded down with the wife on back, particularly when we were doing a few thousand of the miles on superslab. My wife hasn't ridden with me on my IS more than 150 miles total now, and I have no flat spot.

usually it is done to the more aggressive type tires, street/race etc.

bridgestone has had certain tires for yrs.

dunlope has recently done it with their multi tread tire.

Well, I have gotten 20,000 miles out of a rear E3, that's why I put another one on.  And as someone else stated, I like the wet road handling of the E3's.  These tires give me more confidence than the Avons I put on after the original Dunlops wore out.

Very important to keep up with the tire presure 40(f) 42(r) is what I do = over 20K for me.
