is 12 years old, and the paint's not perfect. Almost every freekin' time I gas up, I seem to spill some on the tank... One way or the other, no matter how careful I try to be...
Anyone else have this problem? Is it best to just let it evaporate? Tonight, I grabbed some paper towels and wiped up. Probably scratched the paint real good.
How do those get by with the super expensive exotic paint jobs? They wouldn't want me gassing their stuff up!!!!

You can open up the vent hole in the filler neck
with an awal or such tool. That seems to help a bit.

I was just thinking about that the other day when I spilled more than the usual amount on my tank. I never wipe it off because i'm usually running late. I can only think of a hand full of times that I cleaned the tank after fueling. My tank still looks showroom after 12 years.

you guys have got to be kidding me...........Ive been filling motorcycle gas tanks for 36 years. Once I had a bad accident and the nozzle pulled out of the tank and gas went everywhere. I cleaned that up right away. besides that one instance I never get gas on my paint, well maybe tiny spits of gas (pinhead size) if the thing starts off too fast, but nothing to write about. You guys filling up like NASCAR or something?

LOL ya I lived in CA a few years....deffinitely a two handed job unless you get them plastic adapter things they sell for filling bikes. as long as you use one hand to keep that fumes catcher hose thinggy out of the way the pumps in CA arent that bad, unless they got different ones since the mid 80's that is. However, the original poster and the other messy gas pumper are from Georgia.........not California |

Mine frequently burps all over the tank, especially when I try to fill it to the top. I also have swirl marks on the tank where I have used the station paper towels to wipe the spill. I will have to try the awl method to open up the vent. For those in the know, what is the purpose of the tube that extend down from the filler opening?

I looked in the Shop section and couldn't find the article about opening up the tank filler vent. Anybody got a link for the computer functionally illiterate?

Unless you overfill and spill on daily basis, and let it stay, gas will not hurt your paint. Just use a little spray wax/cleaner and you're good to go.

Has anybody tried grabbing a paper towel by the gas pumps and holding it close to the tank hole when filling. When your done pull the nozzle out and wrap the nozzle with the paper towel so it won't drip gas on your tank. Try it, it works. Simon

Take the cool looking sunglasses off so you can see what your doing.  Fill from the left side.  After about 3 gallons (5.3 tank) slow down, the fuller it gets the slower you go.  Avoid the truck stops and their high volume pumps.  I have not yet spilled on my Valk...not yet.  Redline  |

Last night when I over flowed it, I was filling from the wrong side and going too fast. I'll try the paper towel wrapped around the hole thing.

It's just like using your other hose.......when your done filling the tank, ya gotta give it a couple of shakes to prevent drippage.  |

I look in the hole while it's filling. When it's getting full I slow down a bit till it bubbles up. Tap twice (anything more than that and you're playing with it!) and you're done! Do it 2-3 times every week. I overflowed once just a little, when a hot girl was filling up at the next pump... But I don't think that counts against me...  |

I really don't understand? I've never had this problem. I fill when empty, or close to it. I always top it off to the neck. I take off my riding glasses and look down into the tank while filling. Adjust nozzle flow/pressure as it fills accordingly. Not trying to be a smarta$$, I just don't get it?
Maybe your filling station has different nozzles with a higher volume/flow rate?
I got gas on my tank once in my life, my own fault. I wasn't paying attention while filling (running my yap)

Ditto. +2 Although, sometimes you hit one that is VERY FAST fill. They are a problem, unless you are willing to not quite fill it. MP |

If you are referring to the tube extending from the filler cap down, it is two things.
When filling prevents splash and swirling gas from the hose from coming back out of the tank.
Also is intended to be a filling limit, "fill to the bottom of the filler tube", allowing fuel expansion as fuel heats up so the tank will not overflow.

I'll fess up and admit that I have slopped my share of gas on the tank. Some pumps have a fast fill that will kick back on ya. Since I am distracted by most anything shiney, hey! I have a paper towel in hand. Just one note, blot the gas up, don't wipe it. Scratches.
