Dark Side Rub

Nothing is easy,

I've mounted and installed a 205-55-16 Good Year Triple Tread.  Riding one up is fine, but when we're two up I get some rub from a rear fender bolt.  I have a set of Progressive 440 4230 rear shocks with a 11.5" on center measurement.  The nut cages are removed, the rear fender bolts installed with the heads toward the tire.

The question is would a simply grinding down the bolt head be enough clearance or should I add a set of 13" progressive also since I/we ride two up most of the time and pull a trailer too.

You also might have to do the fender washer mod to gain a little extra clearance, but as mentioned....try the nut cage first. On mine with 12.5" shocks, the nut cage was fine. But when I went to a 12" shock, I had to use the washer mod for additional clearance. No problem now, and it's easy.

I just did the washer mod yesterday, and it was not too easy with the Hitchdoc hitch (non reciever style)., but it can be done and works well. After taking off the side bag, I took the 3 bolts out, left the chrome frame cover in place, and used a wooden wedge to get the chrome cover out of the way enough to get the washer in place. I've also heard tell of using a carrage bolt, on the back bolt loction, from the inside out, with an accorn nut on the outside.The nutcage mod was done when the c/t was installed, but I was still getting some rubbing on the right side of the tire. I'd try the carriage bolt approach with the nut cage.  I think I am the ONLY person that saw in your OP that you had already done it...

When I did mine... I ground about 1/2 the thickness out of the square nut, then trimmed the bolt too.  I did not turn mine around like some say, nor use a carriage bolt, but it's a good idea.  I didn't want to go to the hardware store, and made do with what I had available to me THEN.

Could you please give a little more detail of this washer mod....I missing what is being done and where?  I have the Hitch Doc receiver style hitch.  What does the washer off set?

When I put the car tire on my '97 Tourer, I had a rub produced by the fender.  On the inside of the fender, where the two halves come together, there was enough of a lip to cause a slight rub.  I could feel it when I put my hand up inside the fender.  Also, if you have hard bags of any kind, be careful if you put a carriage bolt in from the fender side.  The bolt or nut may rub paint off of the inside of the lids.
