Franko's advice was spot on  cooldude

When I split the carbs apart I found that the T piece O rings on the petrol input pipes were brittle and were not sealing properly. After waiting for a week for my Stealer to get them in for me and then the rain I couldn't get the carbs back on until yesterday afternoon. 5 litres of petrol back in the tank and no leaks. This morning off to the petrol station and another 19 litres to fill the tank up. Still no leaks.

Off to a local matinal (biker meet 7km away) no problems and then another 70kms round the twisties to get home and definitely no problems.

I see a Redeye full O ring kit on the horizon for some winter maintenance. If these have gone I wonder how long the rest will last?

Thanks once again for the perfect advice.

Interesting Colin.  Mentioned your problem to my wrenching partner while working on his I/S and that was his first thought.
