I got on the bike this morning and noticed the rear brake pedal was pushed down and not returning to its normal position. Has anybody had this problem? could it be as simple as a broken return spring?I'm just wondering if the master cylinder going bad could cause this, although there are no oil spots indicating a leak.

Sounds like the spring to me.  Take off the chrome cover by the rear pedal to check it.  One screw and a tab in a rubber grommet.  Easy to see it all then.  Good luck.

I say take off the arm, one bolt and put some grease on it, It also means that the rear brakes are staying engaged so check them too.

Also, check to make sure the brake pedal/arm isn't rubbing against something. They are pretty close to the exhaust covers in that area.

No really the pedal comes off with one bolt I would take that off and grease it. You never know when it may rear its ugly head again.

I wacked my floorboard hard against a projecting reflector in a right turn and bent the peg bracket enough to bind up the brake pedal. Straightened it out with my vise and a big hammer, good as new!

Just as well as the pedal can bind up from a "fall over"

The brake pedal spring also can bind up from the same type event.

As already posted, the clearances are tight between those components and is the main suspect regarding what is troubling you!
