bikes been starting hard lately. Going to swap out the battery. Anyone try the new gel batteries from bikemaster? Or try to use a ytx16-bs instead of ytx14-bs? It is for a nomad but the length and width are the same but is a little taller. Should work ok I think. May have to leave the plastic cover off. The ytx16 has another 30 cca's. Don't know if that would make much difference. But I think Honda should have put a bigger battery in these from the beginning. Thanks for any input.

the stock battery is more than sufficient for the Valk, assuming it is properly charged and maintained. I stick with the OEM recommendation and am only on my second battery on a 12 year old bike.

I agree . . . my 1 1/2 cents worth is 'stick with an OEM'. My first one lasted 10 years and still has a charge in it, but I replaced it last year. Anything over 4 or 5 is probally too long for a battery (IMO.)

My OEM battery went 7 years before it got weak. I run three h4 headlights and electric clothing when it's cold. I'd rather keep the battery cover to keep the battery cleaner.

Yep, and you can get a Yuasa YTX 14-BS heavy duty that has about 30 more CCA's than the standard.
Gryphon is right on about keeping the cover!

5 years ago I walked into an autoparts store looking for a battery for the Valk to replace the original. He sold me an AGM battery that he had in stock. Don't know if it was charged fully or not ,but, I have never removed it in the winter or charged it or done anyhting to it but use it. My idea of winterizing is pulling in the garage and pull the key. Never starts hard or slow in the spring. I do start running Seafoam the week or so before I put it away. Anyway, I like the AGM battery, and it is still working well after 5 hard winters.

Interstate Battery makes a gel battery for about $ 80.00. I'm going to try one as soon as I need it.

Stock battery is great, many folks get many years out of them. If my remember is correct I think mine served me 7+ years. Why try anything else?

I replaced the origional battery on my 99 a little over a year ago with the YTX14H-BS. It is the same size and I figured that a few more CCA's wouldn't hurt anything...JTL
