There have been several posts recently asking how the Valk matches up against other bikes. Of course, the model makes a big difference, as Honda built about five different versions from a performance standpoint.
Both models of the ‘97s made considerably more power than the three subsequent models. The Tourer’s windshield absorbed lots of power, especially at higher speeds. And the Interstate’s weight, even with the bump in power from the timing advance and lighter carb springs, extracted a performance penalty.
So I got out an old scanned copy of MCN that compared 3 Valks as well as a 1500 and 1800 Wing. I have my reservations about some of their numbers, like the 1500 Wing’s top speed. Maybe there was a tailwind. But it sure looks like a ’97 Standard wouldn’t get embarrassed by a GL1800, at least in a straight line (the 1800 is an amazing handler and would be my choice in the twisties). Even some of the new big inch V-Twins might be surprised.
