I was born and raised Democrat.....belong to a IBEW electrical union for over 35 yrs.    The Democratic Party doesn't exist anymore.   It used to be the party of the working class.....now it is the party of those who don't want to work.....just have the govt take care of em.    The old Democratic Party is now the new Socialist Party incognito.    I just voted Republican on this poll.....and for the first time in my life....I'll vote Republican in the next elections.....especially the next presidential election.

Reared by Conservative Democrats,  of course I became a registered Republican.  But, I've never gotten away from those Conservative roots.  Now, I don't care what the candidate's party is, I vote for the most conservative of the candidates.   I'm tired, I'm frustrated, I'm fed up, or as someone else once said, I'm mad as hell and I'm not gonna take it anymore.

Grow up and start taking responsibility for your own actions or inactions.  Stop depending on the government to pull your ass out of the fire, I'm tired of financing these wasted efforts.

Get a frigg'n job.  Don't tell me there aren't any good jobs, I didn't say get a good job, I said get a job.

I answered Republican...thats what I hae been voting.  However, I hold no loyalty It seems both parties have lost their way.  I was republican because historically they were for small government and less intrusion into our lives, but that doesnt seem true anymore......So I think I soon will be partyless, and vote for the person(s) that will get the job done:

-maintain a strong military
-preserve gun rights (all rights actually)
-reduce size of government
-reduce wasteful spending
-let the free market build the economy

We need to return to the land of opportunity, not the land of bailouts handouts and government programs

If you're not a liberal in your 20's, you have no heart...

Libertarian breaking towards the Democrats from 18 until my mid 20's...
(The Clinton semi-auto gun ban broke me of that habit though)

If you're not a conservative by your 30's, you have no brain...

Libertarian breaking towards the Republicans ever since. If it's a "low stakes" election where I see little or no difference between either candidate, I'll vote Libertarian. If it's a high stakes election where I might not like either side, but one is materially different from the other, even if I hafta hold my nose when I do it, I generally vote for the Republican...

Although I consider myself either Libertarian or Independent, and labeled myself as such in this poll...

I usually explain Libertarianism to people that ask as being so conservative I'm liberal, and so liberal I'm conservative...

Some very good comments here.

I very much identify with John (Jabba), FLAVALK,Art708, Dave (in Frisco), Doubletee and Serk had to say.  Neither of the two major parties thrill me.  They have both raped the Social Security system and the general health of our nation, however I see the Republican party as the lesser of the 2 evils, and that is what I voted in this poll.  I clearly identify more with the philosopy of the Libertarians, and would have voted Libertarian in this poll had it been a choice.

I join Jess from VA in his thumbs up to DIGGER.  I too was born and raised a conservative Democrat, but left the party after the first term of Jimmy Carter....and never looked back.

Serk quoted one of my favorite Winston Churchill quotes, "If you're not a conservative by your 30's, you have no brain...".  However the great prime minister's words are not entirely true today....BO, Charles Rangel, Harry Reid, et.al. all have very capable brains and high intellect (I intentionally omitted Pelosi) , they just subscribe to a different ideology.  An ideology that I and other conservatives see as dangerous to our liberties, and the general well being of our nation (especially when it comes to competing in this global, integrated economy we now live in).

conservative first, republican second

I just spent a weekend on my uncles farm help out while he's laid up, mostly helping my aunt's brother who is a few yearss older then me. we ahd some great discussions about the current hot topics, immagration the mosque in mahattan. he sounded as conservative as me, and then he said now I don't know how you feel about this but I'm a democrat born and raised. I said are you sure? you sound like me and I'm a republican.

that was saturday, on monday he told me he likes to watch glenn beck! I said do your other democrat friends know? he laffed and said he like glenn because he backs everything he says up with facts.

take it or leave it, I'm not sure we actually had this conversation I'm still dazed by it.

took the test and came up conservative, what an eye opener  coolsmiley

Took the quiz... and just what I had imagined...  right on the line of libertarian and conservative.  I am with Jabba on this one too...

I am tired of "labels", the party's have strayed away from "representing the people" to knowing what is best for the people and they have it all wrong.   Bush did say that it is better for the American people to spend their own money than for the government to think they can spend it better.  (wish he would have done a better job at following through, the statement is dead on).   If you look at the votes in congress most vote party lines and it annoys me.  They don't vote for the people but they vote to make the other members in their little box make them like them by voting with them.  It frustrates me to no end.

Stop all this spending and finger pointing and let the people have the power back.  I don't like hearing about Pelosi commenting on the mosque in NY or even obama adding his two cents.  Let the people in NY make the decision.  Those people suffered the most during 9/11 and obviously they haven't forgot what happened.

Okay off my soap box..  We have way too many regulations and the government has grown way to big..  Democrat or Republicans doesn't matter they both are doing it..   Nuff said..

both of my grandfathers were union men when being a union man meant 3 guys sharing 1 job and paying the rent on the 1br apt the whole family lived in. Neither got much past 4th grade.

I was raised a conservative democrat

After some great emails with Jabba and many others I came to realize my point of view was actually more libertarian, with a healthy sadistic amount of republican thrown in as regards people who create wealth should get to decide where it goes.  I did like Huckabee as a candidate for President. He was non apologetic for being religious and except for his tax (liked sales tax as a national tax) view I thought he would have made a great and HONEST president who was born in the USA

I think it is a shame that the Safety net that was social security has been robbed just like the state governments all rob from the lottery fund that was set up for Education

I am still registered as a democrat but have not voted for one in a decade or more, mostly my job appears to be to cancel the wife's vote tickedoff and I do not engage in political discussions with her as I like sleeping in my own bed

Registered Democrat back when I was 20 something. Voted that way ONCE.  I've apologized for that vote more than once.  I vote Republican if they're conservative enough to deserve my vote now.  Teamster union for 32 years, and they still don't understand why the members don't follow their "lead".   Mainly cause they're headlong into socialism.   My dad told me when I was a teen, that the Democrats are now what we used to call Socialists, and the Republicans have become what the Democrats used to be.  That was 1966, and it's even more true now than it was then.  I lean towards the Libertarian side in many issues.  I even voted for Ross Perot.  In Texas you can cross party lines to vote in primaries., so I voted for Hillary last time, hoping to keep Nobama out.  Come on 2012 !!

digger, fifteen years ago i wanted to join the local IBEW.  when i went to the union hall there was a poster on the wall telling all its union workers to vote for clinton 'cause bush was going to destroy the union.  i made the mistake of questioning that poster, i never got called to join the union.  fast forward 8 years.  the CWA (communications workers of america) came to a job site and wanted all us phone guys to join the union.  i wanted to join, i even gave them the phone numbers of four other co-workers that were interested in the union.  when i told them that i wanted to join the IBEW and that most of my co-workers were republican, none of us got calls from the union.  so, i'm pretty convinced that the only way to join the union is to lie and say that you only vote democrat!!  now that's sad.

http://www.theadvocates.org/quiz

They are.  But no worse than a lot of Dem or Republican ideas.  No one agrees with 100% of a parties platform.  Not even the line toeing party members.  Hell I disagree with myself once in a while.

For me I like the more freedom, less government part of Libertarianism.  I am a do what YOU want tyoe of guy, even when I disagree with the choices that YOU make.  Smoking, recreational drug use, homosexuality, drinking to excess... all things I don't do.  However, I believe in freedom for EVERYONE, not just everyone that does what I do.

Now... the Libertarian people that think we can retreat into ourselves as a nation, and become isolationists are flat wrong IMO.  The genie is out of the bottle, and now we have to deal with it.  Many expound that "force shold NEVER be used for political gain".  I call BS.  I am a VERY hawkish Libertarian, and am tired of the namby pamby America.  Other nations want to play nice... we'll be your BEST friend.  If you don't... 1 Cut them off.  Totally from American support, aid, and consumerism.  2 kick the ever living crap outta them if they don't cut the crap.

Walk softly and carry a BIG stick.  We need to decide if we're gonna be the worlds police or not.  If not... quit trying to tell everyone else how to run their country.  If so... we need to start cracking heads.

Pick one.

Kleptocracy, alternatively cleptocracy or kleptarchy, from Greek: κλέπτης (thieve) and κράτος (rule), is a term applied to a government that takes advantage of governmental corruption to extend the personal wealth and political power of government officials and the ruling class (collectively, kleptocrats), via the embezzlement  of state funds at the expense of the wider population, sometimes without even the pretense of honest service. The term means "rule by thieves". Not an "official" form of government (such as democracy, republic, monarchy, theocracy) the term is a pejorative for governments perceived to have a particularly severe and systemic problem with the selfish misappropriation of public funds by those in power.

I recently changed my voter registration to  "no party affiliation" I am sick of politics, when one party is in power the other does nothing but sabatoge the other. I believe it is no longer one party against the other, it is the political elite against the rest of us. George Washington warned the citizens of his day not be associated with political parties and to beware of the rise of political parties. It maybe a couple of hundred years later but I am taking his advice. It just shows me how the parties have stacked the deck, no party affiliation no voting in primarys.
