Hello I have a 98 std I bought new. I have a little under 13K miles. I really would like an I/S model. Problem is my wife loves OUR bike, colors, ect. I see a lot of I/S parts on ebay, faring, trunk, bags, ect. ect. Can anyone tell me about the wiring harness? Is the Interstate different due to more stuff, or would all the extra hook ups happen to be there? Or should i just get a different bike, or wife? thanks for any help.

Oh I thought this was about something else! What color is your bike? You might find one in the I/S. Be easier and cheaper in the long run to get a I/S. You will need to change the wiring. I to thought about the I/S but after getting my tourer the way I like it, glad I didn't get one. Nice not having the extra weight. Not sure about the wife, gotta pic?

There was JUST a longer version of THIS thread. Search for it.
the answer is yes you can... But I ask yet again... why would you WANT to?
I have both. the IS has a place. But I like my STD better. If you want an IS. Sell the STD and BUY an IS. I just bought one in May, 32K for $6K.

Crazy question but is the only difference between a Standard and a Tourer are the hard bags and windshield?? Yep. BUT, I thought he asked about changing to an I/S. STD to Tourer Simple add bags and windshield. STD or Tourer to I/S. Anything can be done, but after buying the needed parts you more than likely can find a used I/S. Parts needed: bags rear box Fairing, holds all the electrical, electrical speedo, electrical pulse pickup on the front wheel, shroud for the radiator, crash bars to be able to mount the pods, these bars also run air to the radiator shroud, and other things needed. A $#&& OF A LOT OF WORK to accomplice this Little task. Someone converted one on the board, He had 'BEE' in his handle.

The interstate has different shocks (a nice upgrade), reinforced frame, and rubber engine mounts.

Can anyone tell me about the wiring harness? Is the Interstate different due to more stuff, or would all the extra hook ups happen to be there? Or should i just get a different bike, or wife? To answer one of your original questions, the wiring harness is quite different.
The Interstate is a completely different model with some differences not being immediately obvious.
Buy an Interstate, but keep your Standard.

Buy an Interstate, but keep your Standard. +1 The extra equipment for a conversion is probably at least as half as much as the cost of a nice Interstate and you will actually have an Interstate instead of a converted standard plus you still have your standard. It is a buyer's market right now.

I just completed this yesterday and I'm back on the road. Looks and runs great. Have to take some pictures this week. I put in a new circuit board for the speed/tach and display. It sits in the gargage showing 5 miles on the clock.
It was a fun project. I learned a great deal about the bike in the process. Not sure I would ever do it again. Lots of work gather parts. I painted it in the process. The wiring harness wasn't all that bad if you get a good IS harness to start. A couple items on the STD don't match the IS harness and I had to swap those out for IS parts. Kickstand switch, turn signal switch, and IGN switch were to big ones.
It took me 2 months from the time I dropped things with the painter till I got it together. Missed a lot of great riding weather but there is still some left plus I look forward to next year.
