Just noticed an oil residue on top of the cylinders (see photo). It's clean oil and seems to collect near the intake runners. I changed oil 140 miles ago, didn't spill any and did not overfill. There is a smaller amount on the right bank as well. 71,000 well maintained miles. Any suggestions are appreciated

There is a crankcase vent system into the air cleaner. Rear under side of the air cleaner case. Check and see if it is coming from there.

I hae never really seen what happenes if you NEVER drain the "dragon drool" could this be what happenes. That oil doesnt look like the brown residue that oozes out when the intake runners go bad, but if its not the airbox, the o-rings may be worth checking

as Chris said, usually the residue is darker, but it might be worth changing them at least on that side. The first one that I had to leak, it was pretty obvious which one had a problem.

Fresh oil coming from the intakes would be some kind of blow by from the rings or valves did you over fill the oil when chande it? maybe coming from the valve covers. is there any smoke from the exhaust?

Wow, quick response guys, thanks.
I admit that I haven't drained the "dragon drool" perhaps as often as I should and just did that before posting. It was dark and pretty ugly... well you know how that is. The oil level is maybe 1/8" inch above the center mark on the dipstick when the bike is perpendicular.
It seems to run well, the only thing I notice is that I have to spin the starter longer when it has been running to restart it.
I'll start checking your suggestions and post back with results.

Since you just changed out the "O"-rings I would suspect that you reassembly was faulty.
Insuring that the bottom of the riser is fully flat cannot be assured by simply tightening the bolts.
The exact same thing was reported a couple of weeks ago by someone on this forum.
His risers all on one side of the motor were raised a little on the back side which he could not see!!!!
Took him a little while to discover his error.

OK, I have checked the crankcase vent to the aircleaner - no oil residue no visible smoke pretty certain it not anitifreeze - I've tackled a/f leaks before Although I have not yet replaced the intake o-rings, it's looking like they are the culprit. On the right side there is a trail of oil down the raised part of the block that the runners mount to. I'll be careful to get them flush. Thanks Ricky D.
All is not bad, however, it's been so long since I've had to do any wrenching on my baby, life has been getting a bit dull. I'll go scouting for the o-rings tomorrow and spend some quality garage time!
Thanks for all the suggestions!

Based on you later comment, could it be coming from the top of the engine case. seems like I remember there is an oil passage in the top sealing surface of the block.
Clean the area real good, start, let the engine run and watch for the leak.
