From your description it seems that it would not turn over??
If that is correct, think electrical, clean connections(starter, battery), check battery.

If it is turning over and not starting, think fuel.

You might try the starter button maintenance, see link below. Might look at the starter solinoid behind the right side cover, it might be melted, worth a look.

Check the Shoptalk section for the starter button maintenance. It could also be the starter relay under the side cover. A hot wire comes from the battery to a screw terminal and leaves to the starter from an adjacent screw terminal. You can jump the starter by shorting these two terminals with the key turned to ON.

Problems with the starter button switch are common on Valks. On the Standards and Tourers the headlights are fed directly through the switch, no relays are used. Many of us install relays to reduce the load on the switch. If you have auxilliary lighting it needs to be fed by a relay as well.

Sorry Maldog, I didn't notice you sitting on an Interstate. Statrer button maintenace is still the best guess.

dont forget to check the starter relay under the right sice side cover.......you can clean the connections for the plug and lightly coat with dilactic grease to keep moisture out

That sounds like a poorly performing battery on it's last breath.

Some will resist getting a new battery and rather try everything else except a new battery.

It's almost like a religious thing!

When you stop or while riding check the temp on the starter switch housing, if it is hot start there, clean and tighten all connections, including the kill switch.

Hot motors start harder than cool.  Also, he said the lights dim when trying.  Sounds like a battery starting to fail.  Get a new one.
