Just how much CHROME can a person buy???

Hey everyone. I have had a few motorcycles in my lifetime & I have always Chromed them out to the max. I have only owned this 97 Valk for 13 months & I am just beginning to Chrome it out. I usually trade my bikes in & take it in the shorts when I do. The dealers NEVER seem to take into account the value of the Chrome & custom seats we have installed on our steeds. Would it be best to try & sell the bike to a private indivdual or trade it in? I once tried to sell a Goldwing to a private person & put in the paper how much I wanted for it. A guy came out to look at it & said he has cash but when he arrived at my house to look at it he was about a thousand dollars short. So, why did he even bother to come look at it??? I told him that when I advertised the bike the price is EXACTLY what I needed for it. Then he somehow had more cash. We went back & forth on the price. I finally told him that I either get what I wanted or no deal. He made an offer about $100.00 short. Then I told him that even if he had what I wanted it was not for sale to him. He finally offered my price & I told him it was not for sale anymore. It' a lot about attitude to me. I had every Chrome piece I could buy for that bike. I later sold it to someone at a higher price than I had originally advertised. Has that situation ever happened to anyone else? I say go for the Chrome & don't trade in the bike for a new one but sell it to a private person. Have a nice week-end all. tommy t IBA 1990

I never have traded a car or a bike. I always sell privately with a well worded add describing exactly what I'm offering. With photo's of all sides. I also list the price in the add and either state negotiable or firm/non negotiable. I try to feel them out on the phone to see what/ who I'm dealing with. I always research the selling price and whatever extras are included.
  With motorcycles it may be better for you financialy, to sell off the goodies seperately, then sell the bike stock. Sometimes you will get lucky and match the bike with that perfect buyer who "has to have" your bike just the way you have customized it. I take care of everthing I own and peope can see that right away. I have never had any problems selling privately.
  I also make out a "bill of sale" with vehicle description, make model, vin#, selling price and buyers full name and address which is verified by their drivers license. This way if they choose not to go and do the right thing and motorvehicle, I'm protected.
  This "BIll of Sale" saved me much headache once. I sold a vehecle, the guy never registered it in his name. Long story short, one year later he gets in a an accident with death and ditches the vehicle and runs. Guess who they come after? Yup, me. I had my Bill of Sale prooving the sale and his wife (ex-wife) verified this. Still a major hassle dealing with attorneys.

Oh yea...You can buy allot of chrome for the Valkyrie, if you know where to get it. Many of the chrome goodies simply are not made anymore.

Here are some of the "rules" I've been taught over the years of wheeling-and-dealing motorized vehicles:

1.  You will ALWAYS get more $$$ by selling privately than dealing with a $tealership
2.  You will not get your money back for any customization you've done - unless, as stated, you find that special someone who has to have exactly what you've got
3.  Always price your car/bike/truck/etc... higher than what you actually want to sell it for.  That way, when the potential buyer "talks you down" to "their" price, they feel like they've gotten a great deal and you are happy with them being none the wiser - cause you got what you wanted for it anyways.
4.  Before you put anything up for sale, know what your boundaries are.  Meaning - what is the lowest $$$ you will take, will you let someone test drive, will you deliver, etc.  That way you are not making these decisions when someone is waving a big stack of bills in your face, but is short of what you really want (sounds like you've got this one down).

I'm sure there are a lot more tips that someone more experienced can offer - but that's all that is coming off the top of my head at the moment.

i'm not a big fan of chrome, but i'd reather have a chrome tranny cover then an ugly painted engine block!!  i'm more into lights......

If you're building a bike to enjoy, then make it the way you want. If you're building a bike for resale...then leave it more or less stock. That's always been my rule of thumb.

Yeah I've kicked my a$$ several times for not buying some chrome wheels back in the late 90's when several mfg's was making wheels for the Valk    That Wing is awesome

Yeah, I like some lighting also but, my preference is to hide the lights so that the light produced is reflected off of the chrome.
