When riding the bike clunked a couple times in the drive train, so I pulled over, now it wont move at all. When you put it in gear and let out the clutch it just goes clickity click. I'm gonna tear it down later this weekend but am just wondering the best source for final drive parts. I have already spoken to someone much more familiar with this problem than I am and have got some good info already but I just wanted to pu it up here. The motor still runs fine and is definately a driveline problem, any additional ionfo would be great, thanks.

Probably a u-joint.  Maybe splines/pinion cup on driveshaft.

You will need to get a used ujoint from pinwall or elsewhere, as new ones from Honda are backordered, with delivery expected in Feb. of 11, if I remember right.

Sounds a lot like the pinion cup... hopefully you won't need a currently hard-to-get u-joint.

Good luck...

Your dealer$ probably a fast place for new parts, Honda Direct Line
is a good on-line place...

All 1500 Wing U joints will interchange. Try a trike shop for one with the OEMs not available.

If you search for BikeBandit part number 644090 you'll find that it fits ALL 1500cc Honda Goldwings AND Valkyries .... and in case your wondering they are on back order also.

Did you pull the drive-shaft out of the final drive and check it 9,000 miles ago also or just lube the splines ?

+1......................
I had a PERFECT final drive hub, nicely lubed no sign of wear & a driveshaft/pinion cup all torn to heck about ready to fail.
Checking the d/s & pinion cup WILL be the new routine at every tire change!
Live & learn! Embarrassed Glad I caught it now rather than out on the road.  Shocked cooldude

Hard to tell exactly how bad the parts are since they are so crummy with junk.

It looks like the drive shaft is pretty bad however.

I'ld bet you a dollar to donut that the pinon cup is stripped out. Easy fix less than a $100 to repair. Mine did the same thing one morning going to work.

All I did 9,00 miles ago was to grease the splines, was not aware of the pinion cup issue. What exactly is the pinion cup of which you all speak? I cant find it in any parts listings. Is it the tranny end of the driveshaft? My mechanic is gonna pull it apart tommorow.

Thanks again for all the help.

The drive shaft jambs into the universal at the engine, and into the pinion cup at the wheel...

I just pulled mine apart friday.  U-joint, propeller shaft and pinion joint are toast.  All parts are available except for the u-joint, backordered until Feb 2011.  WTF?

Does anyone know if the u-joint yoke can be machined so that the u-joint can be replaced?

Has anyone actually CONFIRMED that all 1500 Wing U-joints will enterchange with the OEM Valk U-joint??   If it's true, I just can't believe that all the wing U-joints are on back order too!!  I'll be changing my rear tire in a couple more months and have already ordered new dampers + inserts and brake pads.  After 9/25 (next billing cycle) I'll be ordering a new U-joint.  This will be my fourth U-joint.  However, the bike has 226K on her now.  I want to do everything at the same time.

Well I still have not torn apart my rear end to see whats wrong but I was blessed in that a local trike shope had a complete 2001 Valk rear end he sold me REAL cheap. It is complete with a new metz tire swingarm, brake caliper, rotor and everything. So I hope Im good now and will have a spare from now on.
