I have the bike up on a lift replacing rear wheel bearings, lubing splines and other rearend maintenance. I checked the dampners and there was quite a bit of slop in them, so I figured I would go ahead and replace them. I got my new dampners out of the cabinet and dropped the first in place and received quite a shock. In the middle of the dampners there is a large hole where the bushing should be. It appears there are 2 different styles of rear wheel dampners for our Valkyries. The set I have is for a 1997 Tourer (that I used to own) and may work for other models as well. They need a separate dampner piece that goes in the center of the dampner. HDL shows the differences between these and the ones I need. The ones I need (1999 I/S) have a metal bushing molded in the middle for the flange bolts to drop into. If you have a set laying around you would want to swap for the style I have, let me know. I am going to put the old ones back in and ride it until I swap these out or buy a set of the correct ones.

Steve K (Iowa) had the same experience you have... Maybe he will chime in.
The missing (bushing) part can be ordered, but if my remember is correct, I think Steve said they were crazy $$$.
I'll send him an email, and ask him to post a response.

My 98 was suppose to have the two piece dampers, I just ordered the newer ones with the bushing in them, saved alot and they fit the same.

Take the ones out of the old ones and put them in the new ones ! Not a big deal I have done it several times ! Its the rubber that goes bad not the metal inserts.

Wizard...I can't do that. The new in package ones I have need the inserts(old style), the worn out dampers on my bike are the one piece ones(new style). I priced the inserts and they were like $10 apiece. A whole set of one piece dampers is only $33.

I've got three old sets out in the garage one set for a 1998 Standard one set for a 1999 Standard and the set that came out of Stanley Steamer's Interstate pretty sure his is the same as my Interstate a 1999...Will any of them help you with the metal insert you need ? If so let me know. |

Just buy a set of dampers for a 2000 I/S. They will have the inserts in them. They fit ALL years and models. Big savings over buying for earlier years and having to get the rubber and inserts separate.

Joe, I checked the schematics at HDL again and the 98 & 99 standards use the 2 piece dampers, while the interstates use the one piece. I think I will just order the one piece dampers. For some reason, the engineers designed the I/S to use the one piece. If you need these for ole yeller or ole blue, they are yours.

Dave, cut the inserts out of your old dampeners and insert them in your new ones.

I wasn't sure if I did that they would work. I was afraid to cut the old ones apart and if it didn't work, then the bike would be on the lift until I got new ones. Are you sure that if I cut the bushings out, the inserts are the same shape?
