Started with a '99 std with the cobra 6-6 and k&n with the carbs rejetted by the previous owner. did the desmog to get rid of the cackle when closing the throttle. Followed the directions in shoptalk(?) but didnt remove exhaust. Now thats its back together it cackles worse than ever (Louder, seems to have intermittent backfiring too). Played hell getting the airbox hooked back up, Could've screwed that up, hard to tell. {have had it apart 3 times to try to hook it back up right to try to rule out airleaks} This has been a weekend project that started in July and now apparently still isn't finished. Help... If theres anyone in/around Valpo Indiana I can provide beer and pizza.

not close but, the intake runners can be a real pain to get back on. take the tank off, loosen the bolts on the breather. have wife, girlfiend, son etc, hold it down with a large screwdriver or such. make sure the backside of the runner is on. ask me how i know LOL

What Sugarbear said, plus... De-smog does not get rid of all the decel popping especially when you have the Cobras. Got two Cobra equipped Valks & while the de-smog diminished the popping a bit it still isn't gone.

I pushed, pulled, pryed and used every cuss word I had and still couldnt get the box to go down. Finally realized that the wiring harness that runs between the airbox and frame was holding it off. Moved it over just a bit (doesn't take much) and the airbox just fell into place. It should not be necessary to force it down.

Get it in the general position but not totally in place. Go ahead and put the filter and lid on it and screw that down. You need a ratchet type tie down strap for this: place a short piece of 2x4 on top of the airbox, run the tie down over it and hook to the engine guard under the cylinder head on both sides. Then ratchet it down. The strap will hold it down in place while you go about fastening all the rubber tubes to the bottom and the intake runners and their hose clamps. Remember to put the bolt in the back end of the airbox before letting it all go. When you're certain all is well, release the tie down and you're done. Beats trying to hold it down with one hand and fasten the hose clamps with the other. You have a tendency to forget everything you learned in Sunday School.

open up your idle mixture screws 1/2 turn at a time, until the popping is quiet enough. there will always be some popping, more air larger noise.

Ok will try the tiedown trick. as for the wireloom and throttle cables a cable tie around them to the frame tube works there. Just don't forget to cut the cable tie when you're done or the throttle will get all scary... As for the idle screws??? I read about backing the pilot screws out a 1/4 turn. Are these the same? Haven't done that yet as I'm not too sure as to what is what and where it is on the carbs. Was planning to do a cleaning/disassembling/synching when I take it down for the season. So I guess thats another question here. Where are/what do the pilot and Idle screws do are they the same where are they? ( who knew you could run out of breath while typing) Sorry!

Also warm the rubber tubes with a hair dryer or such. might make them more plyable to seat properly. Mine goes in real easy. Pop the tubes in and press down on the air box. Use a mirror to check behind the tubes for correct fit.
I'll send them 2 a pm for you.
PM's were sent to them.......

I did this on a 1100 Shadow, 3 1/2 out from close and NO more popping on decel.

I always take the little band clamps completely off, its easier working. I then work the rubbers down onto the tubes one at a time being careful that the backside/inside isn't curling in. Its' easy to then slide the clamps back on and secure them. You have to spread the clamps a little to get them off but it doesn't hurt them any.
