Seriously debating the insurance thing. $1,000 deductible. Where do you draw the line? I mean if I claim $2,000 for the jewelry, and $1,000 for the gun, mag, ammo and damage to the door. What will my insurance go up?
If it's not a serious amount of money, definitely skip the insurance. I made the mistake once of making a claim against a homeowners policy... when it came up for renewal, they canceled the policy. It was almost impossible to get a new policy. Even when I bought a new house, my rates were affected by the previous claim.

Sorry to hear it:
Many years ago I lived in unincorporated county land.
My next door neighbor was working in his yard when he got a call from his son. Baseball practice (about 2 miles away) was finished.
My neighbor jumped in his truck, picked up his son and returned home.
On the way home he noticed a kid, smoking a cigarette and carrying a full pillow case over his back.
He waved at the kid.... the kid waved back.
My neighbor got home and continued his yard work.
Several hours later his wife came home and screamed, "WHAT HAPPENED TO OUR HOUSE!"
The kid had taken all the jewelry, handguns, and cigarettes.... He was actually caught several hours later walking down a hi-way carrying all their stuff in "their" pillow case.
What pissed my neighbor off the most was that he waved to the SOB and the SOB waved back ... While the SOB was smoking one of my neighbor's cig's and carrying my neighbor sh!t on his back!

Not worth taking the risk of a jump in cost. Homeowners insurance is tough to get in Florida, it's even harder to find reasonable insurance.

Get what ever you want as long as I don't have to deal with it. great danes are not the answer, for one they have health problems, something with stomach and intestines twisting over which will kill them if not operated on. look into this top list of dogs. determine which is best for your climate. some on the list are very nasty and know how to use their 125+ mass against an intruder. There are a few books out there about these dogs. If u have children consider the American Bulldog or Giant Schnauzer . the tosa is the pit fightning dog bread by the japanese, but it still couldn't beat 50lb american pitbull terriers even while out weighing the pit by 100lbs. most tosas will get to be 175-200lbs. the japanese have given up on the tosa for fighting and now use the pitbulls. http://caninebreeds.bulldoginformation.com/guardian-dogs.htmlgood luck and God Bless and His protection on u and family

Great Danes don't have more health problems than any other giant breed. They're incredibly loyal, trainable, and protective of their family. I have no doubt that both of our would give their lives to protect us. Also, it's hard to beat the intimidation factor a Dane carries. Bull Mastiffs are a good bet, too. They were bred to tackle intruders and hold them down until their owners arive.

If you're an NRA member your handgun may be insured. It used to be we had $1000 in free firearms insurance. I don't know if we still do and I didn't keep my membership info but if you're a member you should call them and see.

Chow is the most Loyal and AGGRESSIVE breed I have ever dealt with. Big enough to intimidate and MORE! ! Problem is that they bond with the family AND ONLY the family..every one else is a stranger. Rescue MUTTS from the local shelter have always been my favorite! YMMV

Now this is a dog thread... You want tho know the BEST breed of dog? Hands down... NO contest? Whatever breed the speaker owns... Me, I am a bird dog guy, and have German Short Haired Pointers. Totally worthless for YOUR issue. Mine would love a would-be-intruder as much as anyone, and would get in their car and go with them, if they would open the door for them. For me... a dog is nothing but an alarm system. You can defeat a dog EASY. With a steak, or a .22 bullet. Then... you're mad that they shot your dog. If you seriously want a PROTECTION dog... look at one called a Fila Brasilerio. They are rediculous. I thought I wanted one for a while... but honestly... that ain't a dog for me. Now Roadkill talks about Chows... I don't like 'em. They are IMO, one of the most likely dogs there are to bite someone you don't want them to bite. I don't trust a Chow at all. And I have had to fight a couple of them too. Their long hair give you a great hand hold and allows you to control them is a fight, WAY to easy. Don't get a dog because of this. Get a dog because you, or the wife, WANTS a dog. It ain't fair to the dog if he's not gonna be part of the family. At my house... my 2 GSP's will bark at an intruder... the 12 ga pump gun will DEAL with the intruder. Jabba

Your dogs are both big pansies!! Every time I go there all they want to do is sniff my crotch!! I installed security systems for five years. You would not believe how many times the police just take their time when they would hear about a break in. people would get false alarms all the time ‘cause they would do stupid stuff like leave the fire place damper open and raccoons would get down the chimney and reek havoc in the house, or a squirrel would find it’s way in and trip the alarm by knocking something over!! People would ask me if the system I was installing was the best, I would tell them that the best system was a good guard dog. If it is possible, double up with the neighbor near by. I’ve put in systems that would trip a wireless contact in the neighbor’s house if your house had an alarm, and vice versa. There are driveway sensors with camera’s that take pictures of every one that comes down your drive. You can get surveillance cameras now that record directly onto a hardrive. Those are excellent too!! In the remote places that didn’t have phone service, we used radio monitoring. Far better then an easy to cut phone line!! You’re not going to stop them from getting in if they want in. But you can at least get pictures of them while they’re there!! I’ve also installed cameras in everything from smoke detectors to wall clocks!! One lady had a teddy bear with a camera in it!! That one was weird!! There are tons of electronic options. Talk to your local police, they’ve studied what the crooks do for a living!! Take care. Al.

The cause remains somewhat of a mystery, possibly inherited or line related. I've experienced bloat first hand! You can read more about our Bruiser and his battle with bloat on this page. When a dog suffers from bloat, the stomach swells and/or rotates cutting off blood supply to other vital organs. This is the number 1 killer of Danes and one of the most serious dog illnesses. A dog suffering from bloat may die in a matter of hours if left untreated.

Yep, I thought of that last night. I called and they said it should be covered even though I'm not able to claim it on my home owners. I have a $1000 deductible on my home owners insurance, and they said the max coverage on jewelry is $1,000 so it won't pay to file a claim for $500 But I can get the $600 for my .45 back from the NRA!

I had a Dane for years great dog no real health problems beyond any other dog he was a pure bread and he weighted 170 and when I stood him up on his hind legs he was over 7 foot tall. Great personality loves kids, likes to lean on you and no one will mess with you. Had a salesman come to the front door and had only the screen door closed. Well we had 5 steps up to the front door he rang the bell, heard the dog bark Jessie (the dane) started to run for the door the guy was teleported back down the steps out to the curb before we could even get to the door. I say teleported because he didn't move somehow he just got there and his color well lets just say he would pass for dead. People would cross the road when I would walk him, his dads head was do big that my hand would not reach from ear to ear fingertips pointed at one ear wrist pointed at the other. Now from my daughter I inherited a 13 pound Yorke hes great I was just embarrassed when we first got him and he was only like 5 lbs walking him. Looked a little ridiculous now I know he would go up against any dog. Its not the size of the dog but the fight in him, ok well we wont try that. Its not the dog you need to worry about its the owner Here we go a real rough tough cream puff

Jeff, been there, have a 2nd HOME in WV. Never forget the night I walked in about 9pm , opened the door and everything was gone..felt anger at first, then mostley just worried about the place since I only get up there maybe once a month. I installed a good wireless alarm system, like you I don't have a phone line, its just a glorified noise maker, but I don't think they would hang around long if it was going off... good lighting on all sides of the house will help also...glad in your case it wasn't worse then it was thoe...

Jeff, In quite the ironic twist, your post count is now 911. I second the comments about Bull Mastiffs. My 175lb. Bull is intimidating enough to scare away just about anyone, but puts up with all the crap my 3-year-old can dish out. As far as all out intimidation goes for dogs...Cane Corso. I almost got one, but thought it might eat me on the way home and backed out.

problem with wireless systmes (and i do have one in my house but it is 99.5% wired all except for 1 window contact in the basement) is that the batteries will last at best 3 years. when mounting the external siren, point it twords the nearest neighbors house, (hopefully you get along, and they should realize that if it hapens to you, it can happen to them). good thing with wireless is you can wear a panic pendant, or if your system is like mine, use your phone system to arm/disarm the system. and yes i know you don't have a phone line...... check and see if you have WI/FI available? you never know, you might!!

Years back the post offices were being broken into in the sorrounding rural areas. They would enter the building and then use a sledge hammer to knock a hole in the wall of the safes. The walls were cinder blocks and the doors were steel, (can you believe it?). I installed 1 motion detector alarm in the safe for Perth, before they tried to break into it. Very simple setup, off a battery and a horn outside the safe. A week or so later they hit it. One shot on the wall of the safe was enough to set off the alarm and they scrammed. Thats the best result I could have hoped for. In your case lots of noise and exterior flashing lights going off would likely help. Most of us have had to deal with theft, and we share your anger. Good luck

I put a "Strike Master II" on the door they kicked in. Pricey sob, but it was all I had immediate access to, and my front door was swinging in the breeze. Good link to a much more affordable unit.

Jeff, im sorry to hear of your misfortune. I really wish I could help in some way... I really do! ... kill the bastages, or at least make em limp for the rest of their lives. I havent been broken into ... yet! ... but our government seems to look the other way on most crimes these days... ... so its a matter of time for me I guess.

Thanks That is scary crap. It's one thing for them to break into a house in town were they have several escape routes. But to break into a rural house on a dead end road (if I'm understanding correctly) with no way out makes me think they knew no one was home or they are crackheads indeed.

A Bouvier works out very well as a house pet and guard dog... all the ones I have had were very smart and easy to train. I gave one to my Brother who lives on 10 acres that one dog would not let anyone or thing go unnoticed http://www.steinerhausbouviers.com/main.html

If I'm not home and the garage looks tempting, The second guy will get hit too. The third should know combat medicine and like you alot. The house is also mined. I live in a rural part of Az and my block is mostly forclosed. The "boyfriend of the month" across the street was on the front porch of their house when I came home. I didnt like the way he looked at his watch. I went into the Garage and came out, just outta line-o-sight emptied the .45 into the dirt. He was going inside when I went to put it back. I gotta get some ADT signs.
