In the Navy much of our time is spent at sea, drilling for emergencies. Once when our ship was conducting simulated combat exercises, a message came over the loud speaker: “This is a drill, torpedo hit to starboard, all hands prepare to abandon-ship station, I was stopped by a young seaman, apparently on his first sea tour. “Excuse me,” he drawled, “but if we really had to swim for it, how would we deal with those bears?”

I thought maybe because new bearings are always being shouted out by several people? Bear left....bear 220 degrees...new bearing! Bear 110 degrees. Just a guess...

I was not a Boat person, but I assume the young lad, had seen too many movies with the Polar Bears in it around water. Sheet he just hadn't been up near big puddles of water, as he is a country boy. |
