Earlier this week, California Governor (and motorcyclist) Arnold Schwarzenegger signed into law the Motorcycle Anti-Tampering Act (SB 435), originally introduced by state Sen. Fran Pavley (D-Santa Monica).

Motorcyclists who swap their bikes' stock exhaust systems for so-called loud pipes may be more likely to get a traffic ticket under a California bill that passed the Senate on Monday. SB 435, also known as the Motorcycle Anti-Tampering Act, gives law enforcement officials the ability to cite noise pollution violations under the California Vehicle Code, reinforcing a 27-year-old federal regulation that is rarely enforced.

Under the proposed law, motorcyclists pulled over for other traffic violations could also be cited for illegally noisy exhaust pipes and fined $50 to $100 for a first violation -- a fix-it ticket that could be dismissed with a proof of correction. Subsequent offenses would result in fines of $100 to $250. The bill, which has also passed the Assembly, is headed for Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger to sign. It would apply to motorcycles and after-market parts from the 2013 model year forward.

"The noise pollution caused by illegally modified motorcycle exhaust systems is a major quality of life issue across the state," SB 435's author, Sen. Fran Pavely (D-Santa Monica), said in a news release issued Monday. "Basic common sense and decency dictates that when a motorcycle drives by and sets off every car alarm on the street, that is too loud".

That last sentence describes my @$$hole neighbor and all of his Harley buddies that crank their uber-loud pieces of crap at 2 am, sit in the driveway revving their motors for about two minutes, then tear thru the neighborhood in search of more beer.  Of course they all come screaming back to his house 8 minutes later and sit in his driveway for two or three minutes revving their motors again, proud than none of the POS's broke down in that 12 minute period.  Because of people like that the government passes noise laws like they did in CA.

sorry to hear that, it's just rude people that ruin it for everyone.you all know our valk is not stock, and we just replaced the glass packs, but it has saved our lives a few times.it is ignorant to sit and rev up, esp late at night or early morning, some hd riders have attention issues.but no one will ride behind us still,as they claim they can't hear their own bike!  2funny  good luck, maybe he'll move!

I wonder when they repealed the law that was on the books in the '60s?

When I was riding in LA back then, they'd give you an excessive noise ticket if you didn't have baffles in your exhaust system (didn't matter if they were loud or not). . .  with no opp. to correct. . . just pay the ticket!

It gave the cops an opportunity to pull over ANY bike to be checked out.  police

They couldn't even spell "Profile" back then.  Grin

problem is,CA starts something, and then it travels east! wonder where the aftermarket exhaust systems manufacturers were when this bill was up for debate? maybe they didn't care enough to find out. thank goodness, we have people like COIR and COC to keep us informed of what's going on here! if only more people would pay attention !  Undecided
