Poor old Bear had been having seizures for about two hours. He's had short episodes over the past year or so. Hadn't recovered, laying exhausted. His right leg which had become progressively weaker can't take his weight. A friend helped me get him into my Tahoe There's a local emergency vet clinic I took him to. So he's off chasing squirrels in the sky. Silly old bugger wouldn't have known what to do with one if he had caught it. 14 years 8 months together and (I know we all say this) the best dog I ever spent time with. Who couldn't love that face I wanted a short haired non shedding dog. Hah, it's funny the hand you get dealt. EDIT OR Hi, I'm Bear and this is my Musk Ox impersenation. Hic. Had a few Millers and then their friend Jose walked in the door.

Sorry for your loss Paul. It's not easy to make that drive to the vet. I feel your pain.
We have talked about getting another dog but we both admit we are not ready yet.

Sorry for your loss from Lynchburg, Va Paul. We lost our beloved Boxer, J.R. this past Christmas from the same ailment. It was heartbreaking to see him go through that. If you have never read the Rainbow bridge, do so. It has always been a great comfort to me. http://www.petloss.com/poems/maingrp/rainbowb.htmSee ya on the road sometime soon I hope. Tom and Joanne Tompkins This was J.R. RIP and we will see you at the Rainbow Bridge!!

To all the dogs I've loved before Who travelled in and out my door I'm glad they came along I dedicate this song To all the dogs I've loved before To all the dogs I once stroked And may I say I've owned the best For helping me to grow I owe a lot I know To all the dogs I've loved before The winds of change are always blowing And every time I want you to stay The winds of change continue blowing And they just carry you away To all the dogs who shared my life Who now are somewhere else I'm glad they came along I dedicate this song To all the dogs I've loved before To all the dogs who cared for me Who filled my days with fun They live within my heart Thye'll always be a part Of all the dogs I've loved before The winds of change are always blowing And every time I want you to stay The winds of change continue blowing And they just carry you away To all the dogs we've loved before Who travelled in and out our doors We're glad they came along We dedicate this song To all the dogs we've loved before To all the dogs we've loved before Who travelled in and out our doors We're glad they came along We dedicate this song To all the dogs we've loved before With thanks to Albert Hammond.

So sorry to hear of the loss of your friend. My wife and I have no children, so our two labs, and an Africian Grey Parrot are our "kids". I've been in your situation twice now and I know what you are going through- you shall be in our thoughts

Britman we share your pain, 10:30 am today our oldest joined your friend chasing the same squirrels. Maybe together they might finally catch one. Desi proved our Vet and a specialist wrong for almost exactly four years. They both diagnosed her with cancer that attacked a joint in her front leg. They said it was a very rapidly spreading cancer and they did not think she would live maybe 3 to 4 months. For 7 yrs she visited hospitals and nursing homes through Support Dogs of St.Louis making peoples lives better as do our other 5. We watched her grow weaker over the last four years. Reminding ourselves that the time would soon be coming. We would not let our friend suffer. Her tail just kept wagging all the way to the end. She followed me around the yard yesterday looking closely at everything I did. She liked to herd toads ,frogs and lizards around whenever I would stir them up , doing my yard work. I could always count on her to be near me while I worked . Her ashes will be spread in her yard , We are going to miss her. crap, got somthing in my eye,got to go. .JPG)

Paul, man I am so sorry to hear of your loss. Unless you are a pet parent, you just don't know how attached you get to these children who give everything and ask for almost nothing - pure love and devotion wrapped in fur.
Just this side of heaven is a place called Rainbow Bridge.
When an animal dies that has been especially close to someone here, that pet goes to Rainbow Bridge. There are meadows and hills for all of our special friends so they can run and play together. There is plenty of food, water and sunshine, and our friends are warm and comfortable.
All the animals who had been ill and old are restored to health and vigor; those who were hurt or maimed are made whole and strong again, just as we remember them in our dreams of days and times gone by. The animals are happy and content, except for one small thing; they each miss someone very special to them, who had to be left behind.
They all run and play together, but the day comes when one suddenly stops and looks into the distance. His bright eyes are intent; His eager body quivers. Suddenly he begins to run from the group, flying over the green grass, his legs carrying him faster and faster.
You have been spotted, and when you and your special friend finally meet, you cling together in joyous reunion, never to be parted again. The happy kisses rain upon your face; your hands again caress the beloved head, and you look once more into the trusting eyes of your pet, so long gone from your life but never absent from your heart.
Then you cross Rainbow Bridge together....

This is very strange.
Had not realized how ingrained into my life the mutt had become.
Out riding yesterday and today and caught myself thinking "Must be home at around 5 to let the old boy out".
Today I was asked what time I was leaving for the FCR and replied "About 10.30 Friday morning". This would have been the time when I factored in taking the old boy to the dog sitter. Now I can leave immediately after the morning school bus run if I desired and I ahve the KLR trailered ready to roll.
When getting off the bike this afternoon I automatically opened the kitchen door before taking off my helmet and gloves so he could hear/see it was me home. Only the old boy wasn't fast asleep, half deaf, on the carpet guarding the house.
I can set my alarm clock back forward for another 10 minutes because I don't have to attedd to the old boys needs in the morning.
Strange. I guess it will take a while for all the ingrained habits and thought process's to fade away.
I hope this doesn't sound too callous. I'm glad he went the way he did. I didn't want to face a long drawn out departure. The thought of Bear slowly deteriorating filled me with horror. Most of my distress was from feeling helpless and not able to relieve any pain he may have suffered during the horribly long gand mal he had.

SOME DUBMASS RAN THIS DOG DOWN TODAY!!! When we caught him He was in a hurry to go out, was picking up his friends and couldn't care less that he ran down a dog, He had swerve to hit the dog and hit the gas and ran away faster!! What a useless excuse for a male, because a man would have stopped and said "I am sorry!"

Sorry for your loss. Been there several time.
For anyone else approaching this situation, there are a number of websites that offer advice on how to know when it is time. Just Google "how to know when it is time to euthanize your dog." Most factors relate to their quality of life and their amount of pain/suffering. It's never easy, but when that time comes, you'll be showing how much you care for them by doing the right thing.
