I did several knee replacements during my residency.  Don't worry, you'll do fine!  You'll be walking in a couple of days.   cooldude

Just make sure you carry through with the Physical Therapy as recommended by the Doc.  Don't over-do it but don't be laz either.

A friend had it done in April.  Saw him "cutting the rug" on a dance floor in September.

My daughter had one knee done a year ago. It seems to be working out, the pain is gone.  She works in a physical therapy group and says that Therapy MUST be done to get good results.  Painful but necessary.

My knees are getting there. Bone on bone on the right.  So far, no pain so I'm putting it off for now.
I'm not looking forward to it but I understand that it's successful .

Hey Cliff , I had both of my knees done one after another back in the summer of 2007 and I was alittrle nervous but it came and went ..... DO NOT just sit around and over work your remote control , because what you don't put into your rehabing makes it harder in the long run .... I worked out my legs all day even after the PT'S left and did alot of walking with out over doing it  .... it will all work out and you will say to yourself , why didn't I do this a long time ago ....

Some patients are good candidates for the new method wherein they don't make the 11" long incision and cut everything in sight. The new method, and not everyone is a good candidate, involves a small 3-4" incision in the side of the knee and there is no cutting of the muscles and tendons. In some cases it has actually been done early in the morning and the patient goes home that evening. They're usually walking unassisted...no cane, crutches, etc., within a week or less. The same prostheses are used, cost is about a third of the old method, and recovery/rehab is a matter of healing the 4" incision. My neighbor had both knees done about three weeks apart, none of us even knew he had it done because he was up and riding his bicycle three days later. If you're a good candidate, I'd sure look into it. My wife needs both replaced and was hoping to use the new method but her ortho. dr. said no due to some disfigurement of the right side.

I was lazy in my rehab.  Didn't work or use the knee as designed.   I now have to exercise it almost daily to keep the muscle tone in it.

Key, is WALKING........      Mine, they did the long 11" incision, but DID NOT cut the muscle.   Had I of not been lazy it would have been normal today and as Strong as the other one.   Yes, I did ride MGM after wards, with NO problem.  Not riding now due to the O2 tank.

It is getting there now, just taking longer.    I had the surgery at 5:00 AM, came to, put in my room, wife went to get a sandwich, and I didn't tell the nurses.   So when I called to have help to go potty, they said OK and never came.   I finally got Pissed off and walked to the potty room.   I felt I needed help to get back in bed so I pulled the cord in the bathroom.

Nurse came in and raised all kinds of 4377.  I told her to go F off as I had called and no one came.   So, they started walking me about midnight that night.

My lungs are too screwed up right now to even walk, so I use ankle weights while setting in the chair.   At least I am starting to use stairs with no help again.

Both my folks in their 80's, have done both knees.

Not to be redundant, but the physical therapy is EVERYTHING!!  Take all you can get, and do not refuse any.   The cutter did a less than perfect job on my dad's 2d knee, and if my dad hadn't gone right into PT motivated, the small defect in surgery might not have ever been noticed or remedied.

Don't sweat the surgery (easy for me to say).  On the day of... always take a book (right to the ER).  I have been left out in the hall of the ER for hours, several times, and real happy to have a book to take my mind off the upcoming chopping, hacking, probing, etc.

Had my right knee replaced in 2004. I was riding 4 months after with no ill affects. I've been riding ever since. Just do what you are told and don't think just because you are feeling good with no pain that you can do anything, because that is what will get you in trouble. wait until you are released by the doc. The surgery is the easy part, it's the rehab that's tough, but worth it. You'll wish you had done sooner.     Phil

Hey Cliff,  just want you to know that it's a short ride to Concord, and I have lots of wrenches, saws, drills & duct tape to handle any problems that might arise.  Of course, I'll leave all that stuff at home as long as you promise to faithfully do the rehab. And you thought you were nervous before this post... Tell Tina if she  needs any help getting you moving I'm just a shout away... Praying for you and a full recovery.

Had my right replaced in December of 05..rewarded my self with my first Valk a 98 tourer in Feb of 06.
couldn't ride it till early May of 06.. I requested a CPM machine for home use in addition to the twice weekly therapy. Continuous Passive Motion.. i believe it helped a great deal.. Good luck to all that are going to have it done....
