I put a new Avon rear on my Valk just before my trip West. 5000 miles later it was flat spotted just like the one in the video on a different post. Now at 9000 miles I'm starting to truly dislike this tire.

It's not anywhere near worn to the bars but the traction sucks. I like the low speed handling better than I did the car tire. I like the handling on uneven roads better than I did the car tire. I like my ability to easily hold my line better than I did the car tire, I like the "crisp" handling all the time better than I did the car tire.

But I don't like any of it enough to make up for the lack of traction. I've inadvertently slid it on dry roads more times than I can keep track of. When slowing down quickly before a rough railroad on my way home it slides sometimes. When pulling onto the main road from work and hitting the gas while leaned over, it slides. When trying to loft the front wheel, it slips instead.

It may be because I've gotten careless in managing my traction after 55,000 miles with a car tire that always had traction. But man, I miss that grip. I don't enjoy cornering like I used to because I'm always worried it will slide out on me. I'm not riding as much because I get bored now.  I don't feel safe riding fast enough to keep myself amused on twisty roads so I mostly ride back and forth to work and park it.

Unless something changes, I'll be going back to a car tire when I wear this Avon out if not before.

i had a pair of avons on my cycle when i bought it.  it was the first thing i replaced.  the wife didn't think i needed to, but after she saw how badly worn it was she agreed!!  everyone i know that has ever had avons, said they had some kinda problem with them delaminating, mine just wore out way too quickly.  i'm running dunlop E3's, so far they're wearing really good, i've got about 5000 miles on the rear, and about 3000 on the front.  i tried a CT this last weekend, it was alright, but i don't think it's my cup of tea.  i'll be sticking to a cycle tire when i need to replace the ones i've got now.....

If it wasn't deer season I already would have. Just too many things demanding the time I'd rather be spending out in the woods. I'm not gonna add another one to the "to do list".

No doubt, you are right about the solution, it'll just have to wait a while.

As someone who rides the darkside, I am sure there will be no problems if you decide to come back to the darkside. I had Avons on my bike when I bought it 3 years ago and they did the same thing. It does take some getting used to when you switch to the CT, but I love it and don't think i"ll ever go back to a motorcycle tire. I also just put a rear motorcycle on the front and I really like the way it feels too.

I just threw a chuck of rubber off my Elite 3. It was squirming on me before it went. I stopped a couple of times to wipe the tire off thinking I must have hit some oil. The tire was on the bike when I bought it. The PO said about 3K miles, and that's about how it looked. I figured I'd get at least another 5K out of it.
Oh well. I've got a Bridgestone G019 ordered. This will be my first darkside experience.

Instead of a color, how about a font size?

Too many people use the color in all their messages.

@ Frye:  Could you see what the date code is on the tire?  Maybe the rubber is just old.

I am also DS now but got a Cobra rear in May for my next change because after discounts/rebate it was $125.  The tire that came was fresh (code 0410) but I'm thinking it may be better to sell it and stay DS rather than be disappointed.

My set of Venoms have 4k on them. I thought I was imagining that there was some slight slippage on occasions. Guess not.

Sorry it's taken me so long to reply. Works been demanding too much of my time lately. The date code is 1509 so it's not brand new but not real old either. I put it on May 20'th of this year and have about 10,000 miles on it now but it's still a long way from the wear bars.

I'll offer it to my son Andy when I take it off I imagine. He prefers the lightside and his rear is way past the wear bars now at 13,000 miles.

The traction thing is probably just me. I know lots of people running Avon rears who corner way harder than me. I think the car tires have just spoiled me and caused me to get lazy/sloppy with managing my traction.

When I picked up my 97 Tourer in 2006, it had a car tire on it.  The PO warned me that it would be different and even offered to switch it out to an Avon or Dunlap if I would just pay for the tire but I wanted to try it.  Especially after reading Daniel's (Life is a Road) bogs.
I picked the bike up in NC and drove it to South Florida, about 1200 miles.   Let me say that the first 5 minutes were the biggest shock.  I felt uneasy, and the bike wanted to go straight and upright more than I was accustomed to.
I't probably took several 100 miles before it was second nature.  All of my years of riding helped because when you've ridden many different sizes and brands of bikes you learn they all have their own handeling characteristics and you just have to make adjustments anyway.  Here are my impressions:
Crowned dirt roads are the worst.  The bike will try and pull you down the crown and you have to push on the bars to keep in a straight line
The Bike will jump more when you hit imprefections in the roads, and you have to keep a good grip on the bars when you see holes, objects (like a dead cat - dont ask) and loose gravel
Turning around at slow speeds is more of a chore.  Not bad really, just takes more force on the bars
NOW... for the good part
I love how the car tire tracks on the hyway.  On the Interstate it feels like you could take both hands off and take a nap.  The way the bike holds the road is amazing.  It may just be a "feel" and not reality, but once I got used to it, it was a dream at high speeds.  I had one incident that really made me a believer.  You know how when you've been traveling at high speeds for a long time you forget how fast you are really going?  Well I decided to pull off an ramp for gas off I-75 and hit the ramp at 70, I only slowed to about 50 when I hit the sharp (marked 25 mph) curve so I had to lay the bike over.  I know better than to slam on the brakes, so I just pulled hard into the turn, scaped the cobra floorboads throwing sparks and accelerated out of the turn.  Had to change my underwear but the bike (tire) held tight to the road and was amazing.   Good luck wiuth yours!

I was on a ramp coming onto the interstate last sunday. Its a long straight ramp with a little hook at the end. I was at 70+ mph when I went into the hook. Dang near hit a car with my foot peg as i leaned into it. Shoulda saw the passengers face in the car.  Shocked Car coulda got over since they had 2 other open lanes. lol

My CT handles great at low speeds. Hardly have to put feet down at a stop and no sway on the get go.
