Yesterday I was riding home from work and coming to a four-way stop in my neighborhood.  There are cars parked near the intersection, so I take an extra second to make sure the intersection is clear before proceeding.  As I was ready to take off, I see something from the left flying through the intersection.  It was a kid about 5-7 years old on a Razor type of push scooter, with a CELL PHONE STUCK TO HIS EAR!  He didn’t even bother to look up as he zoomed by about 2 feet from my front wheel.  The street he was on is downhill, and I estimate he was going over 10 MPH.  Of course, no helmet either.   uglystupid2

Think positive.  There's every chance natural selection will step in before he has a chance to breed.

I hear ya...  Coming home from a friends house last evening (9:30) on the Valk, I saw something up ahead on the side of the road, but couldn't figure what it was...  A strange glow...  As I got close enough to see, it was two young kids, riding their bicycles towards me on the right shoulder, no hands, TEXTING on their phones...  What I first saw, was the glow off of their phone screens reflecting off of their chests and faces  uglystupid2

How bad do ya need to text, that ya can't even enjoy a ride on a bicycle without those stupid phones  tickedoff

OK, done sounding like an old geezer  Wink

And I was thinkin' I'd just cruise for a while
A fork in the road brought a new episode
Don't you know...

I know that 99% of cell phone owner’s text, I’m the 1% that refuses.  I even went so far to have texting banned from my cell not allowing it to even come in.  I’ve gotten tons of grief from my brothers and some friends, but hey, it’s my life!!

I wonder, could I get one of those “1%”ers patches for my cycle jacket??  (some of you will understand)

No, man, I'd have to hassle you.  I'm part of the 1% that doesn't own a cell phone.

Me too Mike, never owned a cell phone in my life.  Never wanted a tether to be at the beck and call of others.

I might need to rethink this for long distance riding, and get an emergency phone, to be used only in the case of a breakdown.

I have one because my wife has health issues. But I get fussed at for not having it on when I leave the house. I tell her she can leave a message because it won't get picked up until I'm stopped...not at a light but in a parking lot. I'll check in with her when I reach my destination if it's out of town, and let her know when I'm headed home....then it gets turned off. Both of our cells have the ICE numbers in them....one rings the house, the other just below it rings the other cell phone. If it wasn't for her situation, it would never leave the house except when we travel. The car has a Bluetooth hookup and I tried it once, not worth it to me so disabled it on the phone.

I'm with you this time Bobbo.  Too many close calls from people in cages on phones, talking or texting.
