Hi Ricky-D,
Looks like I'll have to get my final drive rebuilt as well. Can you give us a list of parts that you replaced? After looking at the micro fiche, I can see that there are more parts needed than just the crown & pinion, but don't want to replace anything that I don't have to. I need to order the parts from the U.S. as they are half the price of what they are here in Canada. Thanks in advance.

You've got that right Terry. Stealers fleece us up here!  Angry
i would be tempted to call all the trike shops in Ontario, etc. They often have low millage final drives which will cost you much less than parts to upgrade yours.
Note: You could use the internal parts from a GL1500 Goldwing final drive. If you do a cross-reference check at Ron Ayers for a final drive gear set (41310-MZ0-000), you'll see that from 1997 to 2003, the Goldwing used the same internal parts in the final drive!  cooldude

Sure, I'm more that happy to give you every bit of information on what I did.
My newly rebuilt pumpkin is sitting in the garage waiting to replace the one (original) on the bike now.

I am holding off on changing it out. I want to get the last mile out of the original and I have no idea of what or when that will occur. Could be any number of months or years, I don't have that answer.

Some extra parts I purchased but maybe don't need are a new drive shaft and pinion cup. I did install the new pinion cup with the rebuild and I want to wait until I can get a new universal joint to do the change out. Looks as if that will be next year at the earliest now.

As a note here, the original flange splines seemed to be worn about 50% and that was inspection in June, and I just cleaned and greased the splines and since have put 6,000 miles on the bike. I don't want to pull the rear tire off because it's such a pain but I really want to see how the wearing of the splines has progressed. Maybe in a month or two I will do that.

But, I digress.  I bought no other hard parts for the rear end rebuild. Just the ring and pinion assembly. All the bearings were in excellent condition. I purchased all new oil seals and 'O'rings for the rebuild. I did however have to get the shims for the ring and pinion gears so that a good tooth mesh pattern could be achieved. That was the only extras. I also had to get shims for the "stop pin" to achieve the correct clearance specified in the manual. If you read in the last post I suggested also to get the 'O'ring holder that goes into the ring gear. I was a bitch to get the old one out -although I did do that and re-use it.

I will be absolutely more than happy to respond to any questions that may arise when you start to rebuild your pumpkin. Good luck on the endeavor.
