Chillerman: (Did not want to hijack the other thread) I have a 99 California I/S that has been desmoged for four years now. It runs perfect in every way, Idle, highway and twisties, I log 38 to 40 MPG regularly, It is so much smoother than my 2000 Std that I have been on quest to  find out why. No popping at all.I did not adjust the carbs in anyway,  The piggies were cut and first baffles drilled when I got her, I have since welded the piggies back on just to stop the drone on long trips (much better) Stock air filter. I did use the Cal model desmog instruction in shop talk, (Thanks to the VRCC) Just make sure all your plugs are tight and no leaks, I left the California carb vent tubing and installed a small inline filter to keep dirt out, if you have cobra pipe or the like, a little burbling is going to be normal even on a completely stock bike.  Hope this helps.  (Darrell)

Thanks Darrell, after desmog I was running lean (go figure in Colorado), I have done about everything you can think of to correct the problem.  I have no vacuum lines anywhere except the petcock which is new (from carb 6).  Intake orings, exhaust gaskets, plugs, caps, fuel, etc.  I have checked the diaphrams and shimmed the needles, went through the carbs and replaced the slow jets.

Currently have the pilots turned out 3.5 turns, stock air filter.  Runs pretty good now.  As a disclaimer I have MarkT pipes on, but it was popping before.  I have a used set of carbs ready to go (non california) with 38 slows and adjustable needles (factory pro) and I am going to install them this winter.  We will see what the difference is.

Btw,  another member has had the same problems with the Cali carbs and replaced them with non-cali carbs with good results.  Hopefully mine will be the same.

The problem with Socialists is they eventually run out of other people's money to spend!

Some people are too stupid to realize how ignorant they are.

Hope the new carbs do the trick, If they do, maybe you could pop the bowls off the cali carbs and see what the slows look like, I would be interested in knowing what the problem is, BTW, My mom and two sisters live in Greeley Co. and I try to get out there every other year to ride around some, beautiful country there.
