Well, things have gone down hill in my replacing air filter on my 98 Tourer. I replaced same 12,000 ago with out a hitch. First, I lost one screw for the intake cover, .85 @ Lowes, then cross threaded bolt for neck, 6mm tap from Ace, $4.85, lost chrome washer for neck covers, after a lot of tugging, tank on and hoses hooked up. Now I`m going to hook up control knob; for some reason will not line up and operate as normal. The knob wants to bind or turn off center. This is a OEM petcock, knob, I have removed several times and re-installed with no luck. Help anyone ??

There's a Oring on the petcock assembly that seals the petcock to the tank. The petcock body itself
can be rotated all around, I have to rotate my petcock body to "the right place" for the knob to
work freely.

The petcock can actually be positioned at any point and can easily be incorrectly oriented.  On purpose or by bumping it as you are installing the tank.  Make sure that the petcock is "square" to the tank when it is installed.  If it is a smidgen off, you can move it after it is installed.

Also another thing is the screw inside the knob.

If you tighten the screw too tightly it prohibits the easy turning of the actual petcock mechanism.

Well Guys, you were right. I must have bumped the petcock in re-installing tank. I turned it clock-wise a hair, maybe two hairs, and all lined up. Also helps me to walk off for a bit and think about the problem. Undecided

All this crap from a "clutz" that is going to re-lub the splines shortly. It`s been three years since I did that. I wonder what I can screw up with that. The last time I lubed the splines I really did`nt know what I know now. What`s that saying " a little knowledge "  Embarrassed

Any way, thanks for the input.  cooldude

Now that I think about, I should have had a clue when the knob did`nt want to line up with the petcock shaft. uglystupid2

it always helps for the "next" time to know what corrected the problem.
