I have mounted a Stebel Nautilus Air Horn in the right side Pod of my Interstate.   The factory horn wires could easily be extended to the Stebel, but they look too light.    Can I use these wires and mount a relay back near the battery or is the factory wiring insufficient???  What is the recommended way to wire the Stebel so I can use the factory horn button?

I connected the horn to the factory wiring to test it, and was ok with the sound level, but don't want electrical issues down the road.....

Thanks

My plan on the stebel install this winter is to use the original horn wires to trigger a relay.  Run 12 ga wire from a aux fuse block & 20 amp fuse through the relay and to the horn.  That is how I did it on my vtx.  It does draw a lot of juice and makes a loud noise.  I do blow it some times when I mean to cancel the turn signals.  tickedoff

That is kind of how I did mine but I left the stock horn in place, there is a tiny delay from when you hit the button and the Stebel actually fires off and during that time the stock horn sounds off so you can actually lightly bump the horn button and only get a chirp/beep from the stock horn before the stebel yells out. Nice when you wann politely get somebodies attention like a kid in your drive way. Or you get home really early in the morning like I do from work and need the dogs to get out of the way of the gate when you putting the bike away and not wake up the nice neighbors that you actually like.,,, I will see if I have a picture that shows how I split the wire out to run both the stock horn and the trigger for the relay. Just for reference all I did was make a little "Y" splitter wire that had the stock size connector on one side and another blade connector that I ran a wire up to the relay for the Stebel if needed I can pull the wire off and use either the stebel or the stock individiually after I pull the end of the "Y" off

A simple course on relays for anyone not familiar with their use.

http://electronics.howstuffworks.com/relay.htm

This is a perfect time for one. Then you can use a small wire from your existing horn to the relay, and this small wire will trigger the electromagnetic bridge inside the relay which completes a heavy fused circuit.

I am such a visual person, I have to have a picture for electrical or I can burn the house down.  I found a great wiring diagram at:  http://www.bikerhiway.com/installinfo/Stebel/wiringdiagram.pdf

Thanks for your help!

When I bought my Stebels, they both came with relays...... I have one in each pod.

I actually mounted the relays to the bottom of the horns itself...... grounded to the frame right inside the pod, and just had to run a hot lead back to the battery..... Used the original wires to trigger each relay. No trouble so far.

Both?? BOTH??????

Are you in Calhoun or Oakland county? Either way, the furthest you would be from me is 340 miles...can you run out to the garage, and honk those puppies? I'd like to see how they sound...

BOTH????

Oh, I get it now....two pods, two Stebel's.

Guess I only have one, because I have a standard/tourer...

Kidding aside, I can't imagine the sound two would make!

Except, maybe, if you could squeeze THIS one on a Valk...

Well it took me 3 or 4 hours, much of it sitting there staring at the bike processing the project, but once I got going on it, it went really well.  I mounted the Stebel in the right Pod with a bracket fabricated from the hardware store....And Yep, now I'm ready to mount another one in the Left Pod.  So I guess I use another relay , right?  The only question I have is do I splice the old horn wires that are on the right side relay over to the left side relay as well?

I was pleasantly surprised that mounting the Stebel in the pod didn't really supress the sound...

If the fuse and wiring is heavy enough to handle the load of the two horns then the simplest way to do it is to just run a power wire over to the second horn from the power hook up on the first horn - you will end up with the horns hooked in parallel this way and if one fails the other should still function.

If you want to install a second relay you can but you will end up with lots more wiring, connections and componentry that are all potential sources for future problems.

I get my relays from Princess Auto Supply; 3 bucks each, about 1 1/2" on a side so they fit anywhere. I gather they are for headlights or fog lamps, as they have 2 'Power to Lamp' blades.
One is wasted if I only get 1 horn...
