OK, I`ve gone thru the petcock thing so now I`m on the "SIDE STAND" spring replacement. I have not tried to replace at this time, but don`t want any S$%^ to come out of the wood work ! I think I read some where to put "nickets" in the to ease in pulling to meet hooks.... What I just said makes no since to me. I know that there are GUYS out in Valkyrie Land that have the right way to do this "very MAJOR" ITEM.

I tried putting the nickles in the spring thing (the idea is the coins make the spring longer and easier to mount).....it was harder to get the coins inbetween the spring coils than just hooking the spring at the top, then grabbing the lower hook with my vise grips and stretching it by hand and bingo its done

Just bend the spring as far in one direction as you can. It will open up some space between the coils on the side opposite of the direction you're bending. Do one side with 2-3 coins, then the other. Kind of a PITA though, but had to try it at least once. Went back to Chris's method.

I stuck a couple of coins in the spring and looked for a different method. Grabbed a auto brake spring tool (looks like a big channel lock with a C shaped jaw). Stuck the pointed handle through the eye of the spring and onto the side stand spring hook. Pulled on the long handle and the spring slid right down to the hook on the side stand. It was so easy I thought I broke something.

Pennies will work, but your method sounds pretty good too. Hoser

Do it with the stand up, less tension on it. Very easy.

Ya, that would seem to help.....I did it while the bike was on the side stand and it was a hefty tug, but doable

I got rid of the oem side stand bolt, the one that breaks for everyone. Just got a phillips head machine screw and a couple nuts and screwed it in lower then the frame. No way to break this one. Threw the oem and a spare in the bag.

I leaned mine over so the right engine guard rested on a plastic milk crate, bike in gear so it wouldn't go anywhere. Took off the left foot peg and bracket to get more room to work. Fred.

Well, I finely got it done. I have been really lazy lately and finely got my "get-up-and-do-it in gear and got it done. Cake walk really, the hardest part was getting this old guy off the floor and up-right. Fudgie was right in up postion, vice grips, and a little pull, well alot of pull. Wheel chocks come in handy at times, more if I did`nt need my wife to pull me back off, I gots short legs.

Wheel chocks come in handy at times, more if I did`nt need my wife to pull me back off, I gots short legs. I remember saying that in my last post. Well, wife and I went out to the garage to remove Valk. from wheel chock. We pulled until we were red in the face and I said a few choice %&(%. Bike would not come back off. A very DIM LIGHT went off in my head, WAS BIKE STILL out of gear ? I guess I had bumped into 1st while replaceing spring. Does roll better out of gear. It seems some time I can`t do any simple things.

I think just oem. At least I did. I just took my old one off to replace the bolt that breaks with a different one. Got rid of the switch to under there.
