Help!  Had to change the rear tire last week, rubber was getting a little thin. Removed tire myself, took it down to a dealer to put new tire on. Mounted tire on bike, torqued everything down, bike was in neutral and tire will not rotate. Feels like final drive is locked up. Took tire off and remounted, still locked up. Removed tire and final drive. Final drive shaft and gear all spin freely. Put final drive back on and without tire, started the bike. Put it in 1st and let clutch out slowly. Swing arm wants to jump and engine starts to stall. Final drive will not turn. So I'm thinking u-joint/yoke. Pull u-joint and find not a thing wrong with it. Started engine without u-joint and final drive, transmission final gear/output shaft turns just fine, can put it into all gears without problem. Only when final drive is attach does problem appear. It seems like when transmission is put under a slight load that it binds. I had no problems with bike when rear tire was on it last leg, rode bike into gargage just fine. One minute no problem, next minute bike no work, and all that was changed was the tire. I don't get it!  Cry

Anybody have any ideas?

Thanks in advance!

Are you doing all this with the swingarm hanging down?  If so, attach the shocks and try again.

The u-joint will not operate properly with the swingarm as far down as it hangs without the shocks attached.

If you haven't put the shocks on as Valkpilot said, it will bind up.  The ujoint likes to be straight.

Sounds like you have the u-joint in a bind.

Do you have the shocks bolted back on?

If not do so and then let us know.

Think you are about 2 steps ahead of yourself on this.

Pretty easy to damage the bearing cups when letting the whole rear end hang down without support from the shock absorbers.

You hear that little "crack" and don't realize the damage you have done.

I think there are warnings about that very subject in the shop manuals.

Now since no new u-joints will be available until at least February it is a serious riding dilemma!

Man-o-man, I knew what I had done after I read the first post. I should have realized that, I've changed that tire many time before, it has just been awhile. The mind is getting old!

Thanks to all of you for your suggestions and comments!!

When i took my bike to the shop for rear tire change. The guy lowered my right ex. pipe to get the rod out. He said that way you don't dammage the u-joint. He left shocks on. This is a former ser. mang. at a honda dealer.
