Yesterday my wife and I took a ride to Cabelas to buy me a new 9mm pistol. However last Sunday we took a ride out to the Zukey Lake Tavern in Lakeland MI. We had to fill up on our way out there and we went to last monday nights QAMG bike night in Plymouth MI, and parked our bikes until yesterday. Both of our tripmeters read 145 miles when we started out to Cabelas. Her GL1100 read one quarter tank left of gas. By the time we got to Cabelas in Dundee MI our tripmeters both read 197 miles. The temps were 45-50 degrees and we never went over 65 MPH.
There is a bar/resturant and gas station at the entrance to Cabelas, so as we left we both fillied up our tanks. My tank was filled to the max with 4.3 gallons of regular unleaded.

197 miles/4.3 gal= 45.81 MPG

Now I admit my bike is not a stocker. It has the "Simple ECT Mod", an I/S ECM and the I/S carb springs, polished intakes, raised tank, and Cobra 6x6 pipes. I know from experience that that the GL1100 can get 45 MPG easily, but who would have thought the Valk could get as good mileage. The more I ride the Rat Rod Valk, the more impressed I am with this machine.

Did you notice any difference when you polished the intakes?  Easy enough to do, but can't imagine it would help much.

I polished the intakes during the dead of last winter, so I can't say that is the reason for the great MPG. But I did notice an increase after I did the "Simple ECT Mod" in the fall of 2008.

I did not do these modifications to increase mileage; rather I wanted to increase the available torque in my everyday riding situations. If it resulted in better MPG,....good for me!

I have friends that ride HDs and they don't get the mileage I get on my Rat Rod. My 2K I/S has gotten really crappy mileage though (mileage in the 20s).

That's fantastic for a non-IS Valk. My Standard never did better than 35 or so. My IS has gotten around 42 before pretty easily.

When in doubt, ride.
