Valk won't start.  Runs Great!, just won't start.  Pushes as easy as ever, I'm just worrying about having to buy next size pants due to the muscle buildup in legs.

Didn't someone have a check-off list of items to test to find missing link for problem isolation??

I've accomplished most of the tests in the Shop Manual and everything is GREAT: Starter relay, Lean Relay & Sensor, Starter Relay Swith dongle, Starter.  However, when attempting to Start, all lights go BLACK as soon as the button is pressed.  As soon as the Relays snap, some item w/ a light connection is dropping Ground, OR FINDING GROUND.

Starter wire is soldered both ends.  All fuse connections look great, before and after cleaning.

Ideas?

I realize my attendance record ain't much, but are my credentials still accepted??

Clean the starter switch & check if you have 12 volt across the battery when ya punch the starter button.

If not, go buy a new battery, AFTER ya check that all the cables have a GOOD ground..

Negative ground strap on battery caused mine, corroded.  Also cut power when I hit the air horn instead of the starter, that's how I tracked it down.  Rode all the way from Lacross  WI. to Topeka without using the air horn or shutting off the bike.   Grin  hoser

Back in time to respond on the way to the shower for the job that pays the bills.

Lean angle switch AND Relay - SAT per Shop Manual

solenoid?  Meaning Starter Relay AND/OR Switch to Relay connections?  - SAT per Shop Manual

Negative Ground Strap to.......????  Terminal connection?? Both Cleaned & torqued

I'll connect a fully charged Automotive battery tomorrow am, RJ.  My hope is that all will come together at that time, but the 13 month old battery currently being topped off by the trickle charger already states that it's as ready to go as a half-burnt fuse.

I've reinstalled the starter motor after checking it thoroughly.  There's no drag whatsoever in that little horse.

I've already dismantled/rebuilt the starter relay/starter fuse connection, battery cables, main fuse connections, isolated all add-ons, (more than we can count).

I'm wishing I hadn't sold the other Valk already.

Tomorrow am I plan to jump the starter if supplying the normal batt connections don't give a satisfactory result just to hear her run again for a moment, then pull the FULL TANK OF FUEL to test the switch sets.

more later

I really appreciate all the response.

Frank, my 2000 IS did that in Chambersburg, PA last year. I had a bad battery. New Battery solved the problem. The old battery seemed fine, headlights, etc were fine, it just wouldn't crank. A local Gold Winger brought his battery to the hotel and the Valk cranked right up. Picked up a new battery at Advance Auto and cruised back to VA.

Many years ago I rode over to a VRCC members home to help him with his Valk.  For three weeks everyone looked at it including mechs at the dealer.  He had installed the bank angle sensor upside down.  We flipped it over and the bike started.
Oh God, that brings back nightmares!   uglystupid2 hoser

I took the 13 mo old battery to the local mom/pop battery store for a complete checkup.

The battery test somehow shows that this battery will take a load up to 137 or 173 amps, then "drops the negative".

I went to the Honda shop for a YUASA again.  How is it that the OEM can last for SIX years, the OEM replacement can last for FIVE years, and the subsequent aftermarket battery is guaranteed to NOT last over 400 cranks, but cost the same (w/in a few dollars)????

NOW, I can't figure out what I un-hooked, disturbed, over-stressed during two days of elbow deep fiddling.

Hopefully I just forgot to turn the Fuel valve back on.......  THAT'S IT!!!!!

Sure it's not the starter witch.  I had the same problem.  Lights are supposed to go black when you start to give all of the juice to the starter.  If the starter is corrroded the lights will go black but the bike won't start.

Not a mechanic but it worked form me on two bikes.  Dissasemble it.  Clean all of the contacts, connections, and the little balls.  If not by pass the switch by conecting the two  leads and see if it starts.

Good luck....let's ride soon

I never had that problem with the Valk but my '86 Interstate sudenly wouldn't start, no crank, no nuttin'.

Checked Battery voltage, it was 12.7 until I put the starter load on it. Went to zero.  Internal open in battery.

Replaced Yaesu with a new one. Took care of the problem.

RIDING AGAIN!  Who turned down the thermostat while I was in the Doghouse?

Culprit turned out to be the Lean Angle Sensor RELAY.  The Honda shop wants almost $50.  I just ordered one for $8.50 + 3.50 S/H from an Ebay seller.  They state having a quantity of 10, then I "bought it then" so it should read 9.

Buy your own Lean Angle Sensor RELAY here: http://cgi.ebay.com/Mitsuba-RC-2208-Relay-Honda-38501-GN2-014-ST-714200-/380166250858?pt=LH_DefaultDomain_0&hash=item5883aca16a

The writing on the relay looks like this:
12v NO
RC-2208
MITSUBAjapan

This relay is used on many Honda products, including STxx00 cycles.  However, the Honda fiche names it the Starter Relay on the Ignition Harness page ($4x.xx + shipping)

Today I rode around with a Pilot 30a from Advance maintaining the power.  Hopefully it will work for a week until the Mitsuba/Honda OEM arrives.

I would like to be able to meet VRCC's Southern Mountain Peg Scrapers this weekend.  We'll hope for the best.
