Author Topic: whats a cause of low engine vacuume?  (Read 1363 times)

Tuning up my 2000 I/S w / 54K miles, new air filter, plugs, checked valves, new oil & filter. When I hook my carb sync tool up, the engine vacuume is so low the guages hardly move. The guage set (4 tubes) checks ok. Hooked up vac guage, each carb is ony at about 2" of vac. The engine runs and sounds good. Ive synced my engine many time, never encountered this. Anyone got any ideas?

probably one or both of these:

vacuum lines cracked

intake clamps loose (there are 18 to tighten)


both will cause major air suckage.

Thanks for the reply. I did replace the old vacume lines, the ones on a "T" supplying pair valve control from carbs 3 & 4, also replaced vac lne between carb and tank valve. I see 2 sets of clamps on each of the 6 carm intake tubes between the engine heads and carbs, that accounts for 12 clamps. What other clamps are there?

bob...look at the rubber hoses on top of each intake, then look at the rubber hoses running from the air box to the top of each carb.  now... count the clamps on each side...=9 plus 9 on other side=18 coolsmiley

Nomally a vaccum issue is a leak between the intake valve and the carb throttle valve or carb slide.
Since your seems to be on all cylinders and you changed the air filter is it possible that the intake tube in the air cleaner is restricted?

I guess I would first check the vacuum gauge itself.. I assume you're checking the vacuum at the vacuum tap on each intake, that will eliminate the vacuum lines.. If this is the case and all cylinders are about the same, it seems like you have an induction obstruction somewhere.. Have you performed a compression test?? If you did adjust/check the valves, the compression test may show something or you may want to run thru them again..

Without reading all the earlier responses, look for a vacuum leak in one of the hoses.

If it has been awhile, replace them.

If the motor seems to be running good as you say,

And the motor is idling good as you say,

Why even bother about it.

You are at a place where many other on this forum would like to be!

Just check to see everything is correct and tight and ride it.
