My birthday was on Monday and my wife said "what would you like for your 57th"? I said that I wanted a 9mm pistol, so we went to Cabelas to shop for one. I had to wait until tuesday to pick up a permit to buy, then on tuesday night we went to get it.

On wednesday I thought I better get more familiar with my new pistol, so I tried to disassemble it and clean it before fireing a few magazines. But the gun jammed up on disassembly and I could not get it to move no matter what I did.

So today I took it back to Cabelas, but they would not take it back due to the fact that that they could not check the chamber (hell the slide was jammed!). They offered to send it back to the manufacturer, but that could take as long as two months (No way!). Or I could take it to a gunsmith in Adrian to see if he could repair it and they would reimburse any costs incurred. I took it to that gunsmith and he said that the gun should go back and I should recieve a full refund.

I went back to Cabelas,....I was hot! I pitched a fit, ranted, raved, and complained loudly. I was surrounded by four managers and they agreed that some restitution was due. They agreed to refund my money, give me a fifty dollar gift certificate, and......let me keep the jammed pistol! Yeah,...the pistol, $50 certificate and a full refund.

On the way home, I stopped at a place called "The Firing Line" in Westland. It is run by expolice officers and they have several fulltime gunsmiths on hand at all times. I took my jammed pistol to the counter and told them my story. One gunsmith took my gun and was back within half a minute with my pistol fully disassembled. He showed me all of the parts and how it was assembled. His advice was to not clean the gun until I've run at least 200 rounds through it, and then disassemble it to clean it. Then he stressed from now on only to by a GLOCK. They are about a hundred bucks more but they are reliable. They no longer carry the 9mm that I had purchased due to high incidents of the slides jamming.

I guess it is mo' better to have a reliable pistol for personal protectection.

I can now buy another better gun and still have my original 9mm.

Congrats on the new toy.... and the bonus items.   You didn't mention what you got and what was wrong with it....   or how they fixed it.

I might have to go to Cabella's and try that ranting and raving thing ..... LOL

Oh and belated Happy Birthday....

Right on with Ruger.... got a stainless P89 as well.... very reliable and no issues what so ever (except I'd  like a rail on it at times... oh well).  Got a stainless MKII,  MKIII and 10/22... and standard Charger... love em all... and thinking of getting a can to share with those 3 or 4.

I bought a pt111 at below dealer cost because a fellow at the gunshow did exactly what you did with the dealers display. You would kick yourself if you knew what you did wrong. 2.3 second fix and traded it for a pt145 later. I made money on that gun!  Wink. since you still have it, gimme a call and I'll explain when you ready to pull the slide again. P.M. and I'll give you a phone #  cooldude

I have a Taurus PT-911 stainless and there is something odd about the take down that will cause problems and slide jams I think... but I can't remember what it is at the moment.  Something specific to the dis-assembly ...  but I always have to review the procedures while I am doing that one.  But it is a nice gun, shoots well and no jam, FTF or FTE as I recall....

Thanks.... that is the only Taurus that I have and I don't use that one all too often, hence my need to review the instructions when I clean  that one.  Lately I have been playing with the 22's mostly (cheaper to play with and just as fun).

This entire post reinforces my affinity for revolvers.  God forbid that you would ever have to use a firearm it in a real "life or death" situation......but a revolver will rarely fail you.  If you can't get it done in six shots, you should have stayed at home!

Agree 100%. The fact that you have more shots leads to two main things.  The "spray and pray" mentality and lack of aquiring marksman ship skills.  Not to say that those who use autos dont have marksmanship skills, but for the general public there isn't enough time spent first learning how to shoot and second leasrning how to react to a combat situation. Most people who own firearms, including law enforcement, don't spend the time prcticing to become proficient.
Sorry for the rant.

Revolvers are nice as well, and they have their issues at times too.  But if only six shots were the answer to it all then how come they created 33 round magazines or 50 round drums?  Sometimes slinging massive quantities of lead at the target or targets is more effective.

Besides, I think the problem was the issue of take down and reassembly... which could cause issues on any gun.

Sometimes the decision of an Auto over a wheel gun has little to do with capacity. I chose my Taurus PT-145 over a wheel gun because it is more manageable than a comparable caliber revolver as well as being more concealable (For me, in my opinion, in my particular situation)

I also purchased my KelTek P3AT for similar reasons. I am not a fan of the .380 round, but I can't find anything as easy to conceal. A wise man once reminded me that the .380 in my pocket is much more effective and has better stopping power than the .45 I left at home.

Edit - I have also never had a failure with either pistol. In my experience (not that I claim to be an expert) the majority of failures fall in to two major categories, Defects in craftsmanship or assembly (which are pretty quick to surface) or poor handling/maintenance (If you are going to trust your life to it you better take care of it and learn how to do so properly)

Other than a few picky auto's that didn't like particular types or brands of ammo I've never had one cause problems unless they were abused or neglected.

Glock guns work, they are not pretty and they are accurate enough to get the job done, or as I have heard said, good enough to fight my way to my rifle. Although marksmanship is a very important piece of the puzzle, it does not matter how well you can hit a piece of paper if you do not have the proper mindset to use the gun.

I trust my life to a Glock pistol everyday. If you are one of those guys that clean their guns three weeks after they shoot them buy a Glock. I am not saying you do not have to clean a Glock but it is a little more forgiving. I own and carry both wheel and semi autos. My only advice is this shoot what you are comfortable shooting. If you are all over the place with a .45 but shoot a .380 or .32 in the 10 ring everytime by all means carry that. As for taking mine apart it is the first thing I do before I shoot them.
I also know now who to take to Cabelas with me. police
