Thinking about buying a Glock Model 20- 10mm pistol. Want opinions, I have owned 3 different Glocks and liked them all but have never heard of a 10mm pistol.

10mm is a hell of a good round.  Its been out for many years but isnt all that common.  It is pricey to shoot, and ammo is harder to find than the usual flavors like the 9mm, .40 S&W and .45ACP so be prepared for the cost or get into reloading.  .357 Sig is another great defensive round but it suffers many of the same cost/availability issues with the 10mm.

10mm is a great round, but a bit over powered...

The FBI tried it out and discovered it to be TOO powerful (Over penetration, and difficult for smaller agents to handle) so they began loading it with less powder in it...

Eventually, this FBI lower power 10mm load became the .40 S&W (They are NOT interchangable, the .40 has a shorter case since it's not designed to hold as much powder)...

Ammo seems to be about 6 bucks more than 357 mag for 50 rounds

The 10mm is a great, powerful, flat shooting pistol round... Jeff Cooper thought it was better than the venerable .45ACP.  But the ammo drawbacks pointed out above may make it a poor choice.  If you lived in Alaska where penetration of heavy clothing was likely necessary or extra large animals needed more stopping power it might be a good choice.  Otherwise, I'd get a 10mm lite (.40 S & W), or a .45).

Been a gun fan and a shooter for many years. I'm also fairly active on www.sigforum.com as well. I also agree with what the others have posted on the 10mm. You'd have to 'really' want that particular round and have a very specific purpose in mind for it to make that choice.

You just can't beat rounds like the .45acp, 357Sig, 9mm or .22LR for auto loaders or .38Special/.357Magnum for revolvers. I've never owned or shot a Glock and don't know what calibers you have/had them in. But the calibers mentioned above are very hard to beat for just about anything a handgun is meant to do.

The best place I've found by far on the internet for good deals ammo is www.gunbroker.com Just like anywhere, they're are very good, average and not very good deals to be had so spend some time looking around the site for what you want.

All the best,

I agree with pretty much everything said. It was deemed too much gun by the FBI which led to the 40 cal.

Jeff Cooper helped create the 10mm using cut-off 30 Remington cases with 180 grain bullets meant for the 38-40 Winchester. Looks like you could expect 155gr bullets to exit the muzzle around 1400 FPS (feet per second), that's 150FPS faster than the .357 with the same bullet weight.  Although the early .357's were loaded hotter and would probably have equaled that.

Hot 180gr., 10mm loads will send a bullet on it's way between 1150 and 1250FPS. Hot .357 loads with the same bullet weight would be around 1050 to 1150FPS according to my reloading manuals. When you consider the 40cal is larger dia. bullet I think it would better the .357 as a hunting round within 75 yards. It would probably lose velocity faster at long range because of the bullet dia. and fall behind the .357 at longer ranges. That's just my opinion though, I didn't research it.

As far a defensive round, have a safe backstop or frangible bullets unless your intruders are standing 3 deep. Grin

I like large cal. handguns and will probably buy exactly the gun you're looking at eventually. A few years ago on a hunting show I watched Ted N. finish off a Cape Buffalo with a 10mm Glock. cooldude It seemed to be quite a round and looked very controllable when he was shooting it.

My usual hunting handgun shoots a 7mm/08 high-power rifle round and shuts off deer like flipping a switch. I can't shoot it well without a rest though. Too heavy.

the 10mm is a good round if I remember correctly it was over shadowed by the .40 when it came out.
I cant remember the last time I saw .10 mm ammo?

Hey Slammer, I share your love of Glocks. I only have two right now, both .40 calibers, but I can see adding 1 or 2 more on down the road. They’re just a great, reliable gun, but you didn’t say what you wanted it for?

There are a lot of knowable firearm people here, even a few experts, so I won’t bother with trying to post any of my views on the technical merits, availability, or defensive reliability of the 10mm round. My only comment (opinion) is that if you just want to add another ‘fun’ gun to your arsenal and can afford to stock up on the round, then man, by all means get one!!! Why not. . .  ?

Yep. It's easy to have all the guns you need and impossible to have all the guns you want.

I just bought a SS ParaOrdnance P14/45 single action for the same reason. Well, and because I needed one to "balance" the P14/45 LDA I've already got.

Smiley And because, as you said, the better half said it was OK!! Smiley

Perfect gun just to have I used to use one for a carry a bit big but never had to worry about rust never misfired and was very accurate and easy to shoot even with full loads. Tritium sights make the thing really come to target quick. The ammo issue is a thought but you can make or buy a little less hot round and then you have the best of both worlds. Never had a chance to do my own reloading on this caliber but that was the thinking till I sold it. 45 a good round slow though 357 to hot and 38 to slow not to mention these are not small. 40 was ok just a little under powered to that lead to the 10. Dont know if you can still get it but there was a 10 or 15 round mag available for them.
