How to replace lost key

OK, I hate to admit but I've lost my only key.  Anyone have any experience with replacing?  Should I call a locksmith?  Can the dealer look up the key code using the VIN?  Appreciate your help.

I'd go to a lock smith, but I also used to work in auto repair shops.

Lock smith is what we always used.

I checked the other locks, no luck.  I'd just installed a louder horn a couple of weeks ago and thought maybe I'd left if locked under the seat, but with a little jiggling I got the seat up and no luck.  Does anyone know if Honda can match up a key code with a VIN?

There is a 3 digit number on the ignition lock barrel. A locksmith can make a key from that code.

I know that to be true, my memory's not the best.  I called a locksmith - $245 to key a new one without the code.  I'm going to pull the barrel and look hard for the key code I can tell you!

Half that to get all new keys and locks, including new gas cap, new saddlebag locks, new ignition
lock, the whole schmear...

For me it was a giant adventure figuring out how to change some of those locks, though, including
installing the bank angle sensor upside down when I replaced the seat lock   

I finally just changed out the guts of the saddlebag locks with the new lock-guts... I couldn't figure
out how to get the old lock-bodies out...

  $245.00!  WOW! WHAT A RIP-OFF!!!

   If that outrageous fee includes coming to you, shop around.  An automotive locksmith can pick open the bag, take the lock apart, make a new key, and you'll be back on the road again.

   Even if you don't have saddlebags (or they're not keyed the same), any locksmith worth their salt should be able to 'impression' a new key for you from your ignition.  Takes about 20-30 minutes.       
   
   BEWARE though.  There are a lot of unlicensed, phony locksmiths out there who will quote you one price then stab you with a bunch of baloney fees after they do the job. 

Check their credentials.

P.S.  If you DO have saddlebags and they ARE keyed the same as the rest of the bike, take one of the bags off and to the locksmiths shop.  You'll save the service call $$$.

Surely the Valkyrie is close to the bottom of the list of stolen anything! Bikes or cars.

Yea Ricky, that's the general thinking on this matter. Thieves have enough resources without adding to them on this board. Whether my bike is on the top or the bottom of the theft list, I don't want it stolen. Especially without having to hot wire it or without having to load it up and haul it off.

I'm pretty sure this is a Valk board.
You can get directions on making meth on the net but not a Valk key(?)- because that would not be "responsible"? Can't grasp the logic.

If you'll re-read 99 Red Diamond's post, I believe he and I are in agreement - not he and RickyD - that it would not be a good idea to post that info to the universe.  It's not necessary.  And, while this is obviously a Valkyrie board, I'd bet that any tip on how to fabricate a key for a Valkyrie would very easily transfer to lots of other bikes.  Some maybe even worth stealing.

this subject has come up quite a few times over the past 10 years and the general concensus was not to publically post any tips on how to access key code info or how to bypass the ignition.  These communications have been handled my PM or email to limit this knowledge and not make it too easy for the scumbags to steal any of our bikes.

Granted, there are lots of things accessable on the 'net that probably shouldn't be there, but I vote we keep as much of this to ourselves as reasonable.  A knowledgeable thief doesn't need our help, but the rookies might.

Maybe this will clear up matters a bit. Four years ago I lost the key to my 99I/S and could not find or remember if I even had a spare. I posted on this board the same question asking for assistance in getting a new key, because I certainly had no idea as to how to get one made. (without the locksmith butchering up a lock or two). Another member asked me to send him my e-mail address and he would tell me how to get a new key made. He also stated that he did not want to post that info on an open board, because he did not know who might be lurking and did not want to lend info to anyone who may use it illegally. I have tried to keep that info private as he did. If you want to post it, that's your prerogative, I choose not post it on the board.

The member PM'd his phone number to me and I had a very good conversation with his wife. She called him at work to let him know I called and give him my number. After our 15 or so minutes of talking with both his wife and him, I would be hard pressed to believe either would be a thief.

I got a trunk key made for mine for 25.  The guy took a blank and starting doing his magic.  In 10 minutes he had a fine workable key that I gave him another 20 bucks for 2 more copies, just 'cause I appreciated his workmanship.  It was luck that I found him, just saw the shop and pulled in.

Well, let me tell you I finally got my new key made, and it got it done for much less than $285 after all.  I managed to get the "right" lock off the bike and to an honest locksmith and he was able to cut the key from the code, but he needed his computer to cross-reference the key code to the key.  It's not a bad job, as long as you know which lock to go after, and I didn't have to purchase a lock set from ebay or somewhere and drill out my gas cap (heaven forbid!)  Though I can't imagine anyone having the tools and equipment on hand to steal a bike, out of respect for others I won't post my solution on this board but I am willing to share with others through a PM or phone call if you find yourself in this predicament. 

The moral of this whole story is make an extra key now if you're down to your last, precious one.  All those who helped, including Red Diamond - you rock!  Thanks!

I have four keys now.... two real Honda keys and two keys made from locksmith-blanks... I have two
with me at all times... that one-key business is for the birds...

Same here Mike, I always have one on the bike, a key in the ignition and a key ring

in my pocket with keys on it for all 4 bikes I have.

It's saved me more than once.

Also a hide a key option is pretty attractive when you are far far from home.

i have a spare key tie wired under my bike with stainless tie wire,,been there since '97...
also if you want to steal anything all you have to do is Google,, there are no secrets anymore...
