Read in the paper today at lunch where in NW Ind, of coarse, someone didnt pay there storage unit fee so the contents were sold. Come to find out the contents belonged to a soldier that died overseas recently. Medals, pictures, and the flag that covered the coffin. Family moved her stuff into the unit because her house got broken into during the funeral. Well the guy that bought it wont give the stated items back to the family. Well, he wont give it back for free he said.  tickedoff Family offered him $1000 and the guy said no, it was not enough. WTF? Family has no money to give the d!ckhead. The guy said this is his bussiness and wont let it go for cheap.
Made me sick reading it.  Angry

Time for Guido to make him an offer.
A letter to the editor campaign should be started and the guy should be named. maybe public pressure could shame him into doing the right thing.
Let us know the paper (with address) and the a-holes name-maybe we can get something going.

This is the way this heathen makes his living.

Storage boxes that are unpaid, they cut the bolt, you have 5 minues to look it over, they close the door and the bidding starts.   Highest bidder wins.

Some have made some hellish $$$ off their purchases and some have lost their a$$ in the deal........

My son just said they now have a reality show on this.   He thought it was tonight, Wednesday, but he wasn't sure.

Damn shame

That the soldiers family are deadbeats and were not concerned enough with their daughters stuff that they didn't pay the bill or move the stuff to their own house. They KNEW that there was a storage unit because they moved stuff into it.

The whole story is a bit different.............

BTW,
I searched it. The stuff was bought from storage 2 YEARS ago, and the owner is giving it to the family at a loss to himself. He had tried to contact them when he bought it TWO (2 YEARS ago. The person who offered the 1000.00 was not the family, the owner refused to give the stuff to him at the brothers request. Looks like the dad had a stroke and the attentive brother just found out about the stuff being gone.

There is a lot of blame here, and it isn't on the guy who bought the stuff that was ABANDONED.

killed in 2002 when a KC-130 tanker plane crashed in Pakistan. After her funeral, the family discovered that the home of Winters’ father, Matthew Winters Sr., had been broken into during the funeral services. Winters said that’s when the family decided to place her belongings in storage.
.................................

Winters Jr. said his father later suffered a stroke and that is why he likely missed making payments on the storage facility. He said he found out his sister’s items were no longer in storage about two years ago.
And who was taking care of Dad if he was that bad off?? The cat food truck?? Or did they manage to pay the other bills?
Quote

Perko said he knew what was in the storage locker when he bought it and tried through a friend to contact the Winters family but never heard back from them.

Winters said he learned about the whereabouts of his sister’s property from Robert Farmer, executive director of Webb House Inc., which runs the homeless center named after his sister.

Farmer said he was contacted last week by someone who came across the property. He said he asked Winters to authenticate the property on Saturday. A day later, Farmer said he offered Perko $1,000 and four tickets to Chicago Bears football games in exchange for the items. Perko refused.

But Perko, who confirmed the offer from Farmer, said Winters Jr. told him he didn’t want Farmer to get the property

At least here, the deeply personal stuff like the flag and photos have to be returned.  Wonder why they didn't pay the rent?

edit.........

Oops, didn't see the post above mine.  Yup, when you get wind of a such a story on the web, it's generally carefully edited to create a predetermined response.

stranger things have happened. Locally someone bought a human foot in a gas grill at a content auction. After a police investigation they realized that a man had foot in an accident and asked to keep it. He thought he might sue and it would be evidence. He couldn't pay the storage fee because he had been disabled and couldn't work.

He was happy to know where it was. He said he had been looking for it. The new owner decided to give it back (but kept the grill).

Strange things happen.

Saw the show last night. Kinda putzy. They have to insert the drama, that sucks.
I've also been to these.
They are alot of fun and you can get some real cool stuff.
The tragic side of it is much like an estate sale.
 Somebody's stuff. Plain and simple.
Ya gotta have HONOR in your dealings to retain favor.
I bought one they wouldnt open. It was  listed as "carparts and junk".
There was 15 big block Chevy motors all in pieces with enough stuff to build them several times over.
Many small blocks and alot of junk. It took 4 days to clear a 10X15 room. $150.00.
My Folks used to go to "closed box "auctions at Bekins storage. They came home with a box that had mayonnaise jars filled with Franklin halves. You get short end too, but its fun.

The guy decided to give the family the stuff back. Saw it yesterday in the paper.

He's still a dick in my book.

Come on, guys.  Read the thread and stop letting yourselves be jerked around by a news story that gives you only a tiny portion of the information you need to decide who is a jerk, who is irresponsible, and who is the hero.

We do this too often.   Shocked

Why don't you donate your own money and buy it back for the poor family.
Show some of your christian chairity instead of  blaming someone else.
Yea right, it's always eaiser to blame the other guy.
And yes, I read the entire thread but these were my thoughts after reading the 1st few posts.
